...Ernie's new rubber ball before he could!

The Dad had been tossing Ernie's new all-rubber (pink like an eraser) ball. It's "high bounce" & loads of fun (found it at Walgreen's, of all places). I was half-heartedly running along after Ernie to make sure things didn't get out of hand (they don't call me the "Fun Police" for nothin'). Hey, but at least I was running.

Ernie finally tired a bit & climbed up onto the Dad's lap to lay there & chew on his new ball. After a bit, Ernie let the ball loose. The Dad grabbed it & started saying "Burt, get the Ball? Burt! Burt! Get the Ball? Get It! Get It! Get It!" I came running over, so the Dad threw it, not expecting me to go after it.

Not only did I run after the ball while Ernie struggled to get out of the Dad's lap & give chase, I got to it first and grabbed it! Then I ran over to the back door with Ernie's ball still in my mouth. The Dad let me in, & I ran into the bedroom & up onto the bed, still carrying Ernie's ball!

I lay down and calmly let the ball drop between my front paws. Ernie paced the floor around the bed, back and forth, back and forth, not knowing how to get his ball back from me. I've been nabbing Ernie's favorite stuffies & Ernie nabs my favorites in the past few weeks, but this is the first time I nabbed one of Ernie's balls--and his new one, to boot! The Dad couldn't stop laughing... and I hope this has given you all a chuckle, too.

I Have a New Roommate

Well, this is a fine kettle of fish... I've got this snotty-nose pup horning in on my family! But I'm getting mine back... Last night he was laying on the living room floor so I Mounted him! And later, when he wasn't looking, I took MY moose stuffie back into the bedroom. He has all the Chicago Crew's toys--he doesn't need MINE!

The bedroom is MY domain. The Mom and Dad don't let him in there or up on the Princess Bed. He has his own room. It's called a Crate. He got a time-out in it yesterday when he wouldn't stop licking my ear even after I growled. And today he got another time-out when he growled when the Mom was trying to wipe his snotty nose. He'll learn.

But, I have to say, having this pup here has really shook things up. For the better. Everyone is smiling and laughing. And the Mom said my eyes are bright again, whatever that means. I guess he can stay.

Today is WINston's Birthday... and MINE!

Today I am 7 years old. I was born on February 21, 2006 at the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana. I was adopted out as a puppy to a family, and returned back to the shelter system in June 2009. Then the Mom and the Dad and the Dixie adopted me in September 2009.

I had an astonishing connection to my new family. Dixie was also adopted from Humane Society Calumet Area, in September 2008. During the summer of 2008, my new family lost their two beloved Goldens, Remo the Red and LuckyLucy, to kidney failure and cancer. Dixie was adopted to fill their void--to be a companion to the remaining Chicago Crew member, their beloved Bulldog, WINston XXLP.

Now to the astonishing part... WINston XXLP, as you might know, went to the Bridge quite suddenly just three weeks after Dixie came to live with him. After the Mom and the Dad adopted me, they found out that I was born on WINston XXLP's 9th Birthday!!! We both share February 21st! So today we are be celebrating my 7th Birthday and WINston's 16th Birthday!! PupCakes for Everyone!!!!! Wooooooooooo Arrrrroooooooooo!!!!!

It's been quite an adjustment with Dixie gone. She was my rock, my anchor, my security blanket. I've been hanging out a lot with OzzyCat, usually on Mom and Dad's bed. And every day when the Mom leaves for work, I hang out with Son #2 (he does graphic arts/photography from home when he's not working the occasional convention).

My semi-annual exam is coming up. Usually, we'd both get dropped off at Dr. M's in the a.m. and spend the day. The staff always would put me in a kennel across from Dixie--I was ok if I could see her. Brenda, the office mgr, called and asked Mom if she thought I'd do better with a room visit, seeing as how I didn't have Dixie anymore to calm me. So, we're doing an 11am office visit on Fri Feb 8. Mom is planning on hearing it because I've put on so much weight. From the back, I look as big as Damon once was, and I'm NOT that type of Lab... BOL.

I have become very vocal. Aarrroooooaaarrroooooo. Mom wonders if I'm not part Beagle ;)

Finding my way with a lot of love. life goes on... one day at a time.

So, how are you doing, ----

So tonight, in FaceBooks every increasing nosiness about their users, the status boxed prompted "So, how are you doing, ----".

Let me tell you how I'm doing. After going through roughly $4,000 start to finish over the past 8 weeks of Dixie's life (urine & blood work, ultrasound, xrays, 3 appts. with 3 different Eye vets, meds, removal of the eye, biopsy of the eye & typing of the cancer at Univ of Wisc-Madison, post-surgery follow-up visits, cancer meds, special food & treats to try to get her to eat, and finally 2-stage euth & private cremation), about a week before Dixie went to the Bridge, OzzyCat's vet said she heard a heart murmur and wanted to do xrays/ultrasound/blood work to diagnose/begin treating his heart problems--a 12 yr old cat with heart problems. So, how do you THINK I'm feeling?

Saturday I Rolled...

and rolled and rolled and Rolled and ROLLED in the same smell at the park. It was so good. I'd get up, put my snout in the smell again, and down I went again and again. FIVE TIMES! Rolling around on my back, legs splayed in the air, tongue hanging out...

It was my 3rd anniversary of my Gotcha Day--the day I was adopted from the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana. The Mom says I have come a long, long way from the trusting puppy that was born in the shelter, adopted out to a not-so-nice family, and returned 3 years later as a frightened dog.

But I haven't come far enough--I still dove into the car's front seat footwell when the Mom and the Dad stopped to pick up some food on the way home. I am, as the Mom puts it, "a work in progress". But now I'm an inside dog, with a full belly, sleeping on the iComfort King bed, playing with my "babies" (the stuffed squirrels that are the ONLY toy I'll play with).

Speaking of squirrels, I treed THREE of them at the park! Finally they're coming out... and they are FAST! But, I almost got one! And one was chattering at me from his HOLE IN A TREE! It was neat--the Mom said his little head popping up out of the knothole looked like the moles from the Whack-A-Mole game. It never gets old--chasing squirrels.

And rolling...

Cushing's? You're kiddin' me, right?

Well, guess I freaked out the pawrents. The Mom said I've been "off" for about two weeks now. I usually run back and forth through the house while the Dad is fixing our food in the morning--I haven't been doing that. I always comes running whenever someone makes noise in the kitchen--I haven't been doing that either. I usually plow through my food and then I go looking for whatever Dixie hasn't finished--but Dixie has been finishing first lately.

I had my semi-annual physical on Thursday, and my urine and physical exam didn't show anything major. So, the Mom had the vet run bloodwork and it showed 2 of my liver enzymes are off, and my white blood cell count was off. Vet said it's possibly Cushing's.

I guess I'm going back next Thursday for the two tests that should help determine if it's the non-tumor form of Cushing's. If that form is ruled out by testing we'll probably go for an ultrasound to look for an adrenal tumor and evaluate options.

The Mom was concerned after reading up on Cushing's to find that giving dogs daily allergy meds can suppress the Adrenal system and lead to Cushing's. Because of our allergies (I still say I'm allergic to the stinkin' cat) we're on Benadryl year-round, 365. So, for the Mom's peace of mind, we're being weaned off Benadryl this week. If the allergy pills are causing the Cushing's, the adrenal gland should "wake up" and start producing. If this is the case, paws crossed, my liver should be back to normal within 4-6 months time with the daily Sam-e supplements.

I tell ya, if it's not one thing, it's another. Will let you know what happens next week.

Weeeeeellllllllll, seeing as how Dixie's bloodwork came back with liver enzyme problems too, I'll update on D&B's joint page. http://www.dogster.com/dogs/1084910

Gotcha Day Visit to the Emergency Vet

How scary! Took Burt in at 5 a.m. to the Emergency Vet because he was walking through the house in the middle of the night all hunched over. Have once lost a beloved dog to bloat, we feared the worst. Rushed Burt to the E Vet and he was diagnosed with a strain in his leg/hip. Hubby related seeing Burt jump off the bed after Ozzy and "doing a Bambi" when he hit the hardwood in the hallway. Some Rimadyl and a day later Burt's as good as new. He's become such a big part of our lives and we're so glad he's here to stay.

Today I Played...

Burt INITIATED PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!
He usually sits in front of us and whines when he has to go outside.
When we ask him" what do you want"
he spins around and runs for the back door.
This time he just sat there, whining some more.
"What does he want?" I asked. Hubby said "I don't know."
Then I realized Burt had his baby, his small stuffed squirrel, in his mouth.
He wanted us to grab it and throw it for him to chase.
Burt wanted to play!!! (only took 1 1/2 years... )

Today Is My Gotcha Day!

I was born at the Humane Society Calumet Area, and adopted out as a puppy. Three years later I was returned because of "allergies". I was very timid and afraid of most people. Whenever I felt most afraid, I would drop down onto my belly and pull my head and legs in, like a turtle. The shelter staff worked very hard with me to get me to overcome my fears. I stayed at the shelter for over three months. Nobody was interested in adopting a 3 yr old Black dog with "issues".

Then one day, Dixie came back to the shelter to visit. She had been abandoned at the shelter, and she had been very timid too. Alex and the other volunteers worked for over six months with her to overcome her fears. She was adopted by a family in Chicago who had lost two of their dogs to illness. Three weeks after she came to her new home, the family lost their third dog after another long illness. Dixie saved the family from their grief.

So, I met this family a year ago. They had been very patient with Dixie and she was much better--much less timid. She paid me absolutely no attention at all. She was just excited to see everyone and excited to be with her family. So the shelter thought I would be a good match for this family too.

It has been a year now. I still go down like a turtle when I'm very, very afraid. But I walk around the park and pass people now without breaking my stride. Just this past Sunday I walked a 4k with over a thousand other dogs and over 3,000 people! How's THAT for progress? And now I play with my stuffy "babies" and run through the house doing my happy Labby dance, It's good to have a home with people who love me.

The moral of my story? Take a chance on a Black Pearl shelter dog. My family did, and I make them smile each and every day!
