Arrival Story:
Sherpa came into our lives the first year we lived in Paraguay. We were going to get a German Shepherd and ended up with a Husky. We read about their wonderful dispositions AFTER we got him! He provided laughter, frustrations, and a sense of something else to think about besides ourselves. He was our "baby." Since my husband and I both teach at an International School, we would take him to games, picnics and anything else we thought he would like to participate in at the school. He was the willing recipient of numerous hugs, pets, and was loved by everyone.....including people who weren't too sure about this "wolf!" At the age of five, Sherpa took a very long trip with us to the country of Ecuador as we moved to a new International School. He adapted to the altitude of Quito better than we did! He set about making new friends and even learned Quichua along the way, unlike his mom and dad who have stuck with English and Spanish. Last year, while walking in a park near our home, Sherpa came into contact with strychnine. We rushed him to the vet as fast as we could, and our wonderful, strong Husky fought the poison for 32 hours before losing his heroic fight. He was buried beneath the fig tree in our yard that he loved so much, with a beautiful view of the city. While our hearts have slowly mended over the intervening months, they will never truly be whole again without him. RIP, our wonderful boy...... PS - Two months after we lost Sherpa, a new pup came into our lives in the form of Tashi. He was the runt of a litter of Sibes that was born just east of Quito and he has brought much healing to our lives. You can read about him on dogster too!
