Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

Likes:
Chewing her chewies, curling up on a comfy bed or pillow to nap.

Pet-Peeves:
Our orange and white cat, LOL. She barks at him, only time she barks!

Favorite Toy:
Old West Beef Tendon Strips, but she also likes "long" toys she can chomp on.

Favorite Food:
Any kind of natural chicken treat (chicken strips, chips, real chicken).

Favorite Walk:
She doesn't like to walk, but is getting the hang of walking to go potty. She likes to walk with a partner.

Arrival Story:
Sunset had been with the rescue for a very long time before we started to foster her. At the adoption events, she would do nothing but curl up in a bed and sleep all day, even though she was surrounded by her many other foster sisters and brothers. :( She didn't like to walk AT ALL and would cry real tears if she was forced to walk. Her former fosters said that she would pee and poop inside the house on papers (that she was paper trained). Our best guess is that she was a puppy mill puppy "bitch", used (and abused) for breeding most of her early life, which is why she was exceedingly shy, didn't want to move and didn't know where to go potty except on papers (she has been bred, we can tell by her nipples). However...

Bio:
...it's into her third week of being fostered here at our home and she is definitely coming out of her shell! She has been playing with Henry, Buddy and Teddy and her toys on the bed for an hour or so today. :) I think what had needed to be done was to get her to walk on the leash first, which is what I did; over the course of a week she was graduallyy coaxed into walking an entire walk (it would go from 10% walking/being carried 90% until a complete 100% walking all the time). She walks MUCH better with a friend to walk with, so I think she would be great in a home with another chihuahua or a fuzzy terrier like Henry as a walk and play pal. Her pee and poop habits aren't 100%, BUT that is partially my fault; Sunset needs to go outside fairly often if she's eating her dinner and treats regularly. But this morning when she was circling the paper, she waited for me to throw on my clothes and take her outside, walked outside (more like ran, LOL) with her tail in the air (usually she walks with it between her legs) and pooped on her favorite poop/pee patch of grass near our home. :) !!! And lately she has been peeing a lot more on the walks, too, which is GREAT and such a big improvement from when we first got her. I thought she would just sleep on the pillow in the corner of our bedspace, but no--with our dogs she has shown that there is a little more "sunshine" than "sunset" in her personality. With my gentle encouragement, she has become a cute, playful and inquisitive little foster sister to our loving boys. She does have a VERY sensitive digestive system, so it's best that her forever Dad or Mom feed her high-quality, corn/wheat free kibble. I'm not sure she'd be great with kids--she is not a great playmate for me or her foster mom. She prefers to play with the dogs and with toys, respectively. So someone who has a lonely chihuahua or a lonely small dog would be a great candidate for Sunset's forever home. HOWEVER, despite her preferring same-species playmates, she does enjoy being held and carried around by her humans. She has a healthy appetite for chicken and does o.k. in the bath (much better than our own chihuahua, Teddy). She has -never- bitten or tried to bite anyone and shows no aggression issues whatsoever (though she does get worked up over the sight of our large orange and white cat; but she does not charge or get vicious about it, she just barks a lot). Please give Sunset a chance--she is such a sweet little girl who deserves nothing more than someone to love her. Oh, and BTW--she doesn't sleep all day at the adoption fairs anymore. She sits up, looks at you with those "sad" (it's the markings above her eyes that make her look sad), inquisitive eyes and actually PLAYS/wrestles with the other dogs in the pen now. Some of our regular volunteers are asking me what I did/where is the "real" Sunset, LOL...and I tell them that that IS Sunset. She just needed a little bit of love. :) UPDATE: Sunset has been adopted by a wonderful young man (she certainly seemed enamored by him ;D ) and HOPEFULLY it will work out. I will update more in about a week after we hear from him about how it's going, but we wish our little girl the very best. IF it does not work out between them, SHE IS LOCATED IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (the nice part...and there IS a nice part, LOL) near Lake Merritt. The rescue has adoption fairs at 1591 Madison Street, which is right by the lake. I don't know if she'll be at the adoption fair this weekend, though...it depends on whether the guy is going to keep her (he decided to take back his other chihuahua that he adopted from the rescue that Sunset is from, but is now babysitting Sunset until Friday or Saturday).
