Arrival Story:
On Wednesday, August 12th (2009) our neighbor called to ask if we knew who might have a beagle pup. I called around, as she did too, trying to find someone who had lost a pup. When I talked to the neighbor later, she said he was so hungry, that he had pulled a piece of cantaloupe rind out of the compost heap. She gave him a little chicken that she had in the fridge and said she had nothing else to feed him. She only has one cat. So mom offered to bring dog food down for him. Mom met him and when she went home she called more people to see if someone knew of him. Mom and her son talked and decided that they would take the pup, feeling that Buddy would enjoy a playmate more his age and size. So mom called on Thursday and he had been there, but was not then. She called back in the evening and he was back, so she and Donald picked him up and brought him home. Donald named him Drake and the vet agreed with mom that he is around 10 months old. The vet receipt printed out October 18, 2008 as his birthday, so mom is going to use that. When talking with another neighbor, Drake had been seen days earlier with a female beagle, but she has not been seen since.

In March 2015, Drake was seen for his left eye. His vet called it an glaucoma event. The eye was swollen. When he went back a week later, the eye looked better (no vision) but there was fluid was in his neck. At this time Drake could no longer see. The cataract in his right eye had taken most of his vision. The girls, Daisy Mae and Phoebe became his eyes. Making certain he was with them when it was treat time.

I watched him and the fluid moved down around his shoulders then was "gone." On April 28th he looked like a barrel, I called and was given an appointment for the 30th. On the 29th, he was not swollen, but looked pregnant. When we took him in on Thursday the 30th, he was breathing heavy, not gasping though. The vet who saw him that day debated on removing fluid. Was going to put him on water pills to help with the fluid and do blood work to check his heart, liver and kidneys. I was told that when the fluid "disappeared" it had gone into the chest area and the rib cage kept it from showing, until it had moved down into his lower body, I did not realize it was there. He was not as active, but he was a little overweight (about 8 lbs).

I asked if the test would show his thyroid, for there was swelling. He checked the thyroid and felt 3 tumors, continued then to check Drake's lymph nodes, every node had tumors. He knew then that it was Lymphosarcoma affecting the Lymphocytes. I looked at him and asked if that was Lymphoma? He said yes, I said it is cancer right and fatal? Again he said yes. My son Donald, who is actually Daddy to the dogs (I'm grandma, but easier to be Mama here on Dogster)seem to wilt beside me. He was no longer 6' 4" but my little boy again. He was holding Drake still on the examining table, and he just held him closer.

It was then decided that we would do what we could to keep him comfortable. With a possible 4 to 6 weeks or a slight chance of up to 6 months. A treatment of Prednisone was decided with a tummy pill, so it would not tear his gut up. We were going for a week on high dosage, then if the tumors were decreasing we would decrease the dosage. Drake received his meds Thursday in hotdogs. He had his morning dose Friday May 1st. Donald played with him before going to work Friday afternoon. I went to give Drake his evening dose and he was gone. Had passed in his afternoon nap. It was painful seeing him gone so quickly, yet if I had to chose between him being here and maybe suffering in a few weeks or just going to sleep; I am thankful he did not have to suffer. RIP Sweet Drake, we miss you dear boy!

October's Party
By: George Cooper

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came—
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

The Chestnuts came in yellow,
The Oaks in crimson dressed;
The lovely Misses Maple
In scarlet looked their best;
All balanced to their partners,
And gaily fluttered by;
The sight was like a rainbow
New fallen from the sky.

Then, in the rustic hollow,
At hide-and-seek they played,
The party closed at sundown,
And everybody stayed.
Professor Wind played louder;
They flew along the ground;
And then the party ended
In jolly "hands around."

Wow, this little guy is doing the Happy-Dance all over!! Being DOTD; I am truly honored. Thank you to the Diary Lady. xxxxxxxx

Today is already a day of great remembrances. The King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis, passed onto that great Music Stage in the Sky in 1977.

Then in 1997, one of the most loving and sweet couples said "I Do" on this day. My Aunt Tina and her late hubby Uncle Dave. They were married for 11 yrs and 8 months, before he was called to Heaven too.

I am so excited; BUT of course, once again, Mom is Bella-Sitting and will not be home until tomorrow. Bella's mommy has to be at work at 4:00 a.m.; so that would make Mom having to be up at 2:00 a.m. to drive there from here. Since Donald is on vacation and Mom would be driving alone, she has decided to stay there overnight!! Of course it would be on MY Day of honor!! That's okay, guilt treats are really Yummy!! BOL

Love to all of you who have sent me Congrats, even a picture that I cannot wait to see on my page, and super gifts. You have this beagle's heart beating with joy and the tail is going crazy!!

Love and Hugs,
