Arrival Story:
13 y.o. Sophie came to us to foster on July 23, 2009, courtesy of the Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue and the Marin Humane Society. She had been picked up as a stray in Novato, CA along with her companion dog, Shirley, an 8 y.o. yellow Lab. The two had not been claimed and we guess they might have been abandoned, possible victims of the economy. Shirley, the younger dog, was a good candidate for adoption and was adopted within a week after we took Sophie (aka Laverne) in to foster. Sophie's advanced age, arthritis and overall poor condition made her an unlikely candidate for adoption and she was not doing well in the shelter. Golden Gate Lab Rescue stepped in to find Laverne/Sophie a foster and soon she found herself on our doorstep and stepping right into our hearts. After just a couple weeks of good nutrition, daily walks and brushings (and a bath!), Sophie is thriving. While she has some neuropathy (muscle weakness) in her hind legs, she manages very well and absolutely relishes going for walks. She is exceptionally sweet and affectionate, loves EVERYONE and EVERYTHING -- people, other dogs and is even learning to love our two cats. She does not have a mean bone in her body, has no food aggression or bad manners. She does have some heat intolerance and will pant heavily for a time after excitement or a walk, but quiets down readily for resting and sleeping. Sophie is a BBG (Big Beautiful Girl) -- she weighs in at 90 lbs, but we are working to take off about 5 lbs which will put her at a more ideal weight and will help with her arthritis. Sophie had a thorough vet check recently -- her bloodwork came back amazingly unremarkable. She is vaccinated, spayed, heartworm free and overall, quite healthy. Sophie is an indoor dog -- she really only wants to go outside to do her biz, or hang out with her peeps, or go for a walk. She is housebroken as well. Because of her size and slight wobble of hind end (due to the neuropathy), she can be a bit like a bull in a china shop (a tad klutzy, but in a very cute way!) Anyone who has a heart for old dogs will love Sophie. She will melt your heart as she has ours and has many good years left in her.
