I fell in love with a Shetland Sheepdog at the pet company when I was 12 years old. I convinced my parents to buy her for me on the promise that I would train her. She was my best friend. She was calm, sweet and smart. She was a rare sheltie because she didn't bark much and would walk without a leash. Sadly, at only 8 years old, she passed away. I have missed my best friend for a few years now. I finally decided it was time for another sheltie in my life. Now that I am older and wiser, I know that a pet store is the worst place to buy a puppy. I researched online and a found a breeder in PA. I am home for the summer, so I am training her every day. I hope to train her to be therapy dog. I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

I've had Bailey for a month today. It is also her 14th week birthday. I think she's finally starting to pick up on house breaking. She hasn't had an accident in the last few days. Also, every time she rings the bell, I take her out and she immediatly goes to the bathroom. She even did it when we were downstairs. That was a first. Hopefully, this is not a coincidence and she is actaully assocaiting the bell with going outside.
I made a few changes last week, which I think really helped. When she rang the bell I used to say "you have to go bathroom?" I changed it to "you have to go out?". Also, when she made outside, I used to say "good girl." I changed that to "good bathroom." I think that subtle change in words helped her. Since she knows that "go bathroom" means, well, go to the bathroom, saying "good bathroom" really reinfored it.
She now goes up the stairs very nicely. She's still a little afraid of going down the stairs. She'll go down about 3 steps and then bark and go back up.
We are still working on "stay", "down" (for when she jumps) and "leave it".
So far, she's not teething too badly. She doesn't teeth on people. She does like to chew on my hair when I'm lying down. She has nipped at my ankles when I'm standing still and she wants to play. That's probably her herding instinct. We are working on that.
Next Friday, she'll get her last booster and rabies shot. I can't wait to take her for walks and to the park. We are getting cabin fever!

Bailey had her first bath today. She definitely did not like the bath. She hatesssss to be brushed. She tries to eat the brush every time it gets near her. I have to give her a baby carrot to distract her from the brush.
She will turn 13 weeks this Tuesday. She already knows come here, go bathroom, sit, paw and lay down. We are still working on house training. She rang the bell about 6 times today. She actually went to the bathroom 2 out of the 6 times. She is making progress and having less accidents in the house. I'm keeping my fingers crossed an hoping that she is actually starting to pick up on potty training.
I took her to Petco yesterday for some toys and an ID tag. I thought it was time to make her official. I was holding her since she doesn't have all her vaccines yet. Some lady lifted up her poodle when I wasnt looking and they touched noses. I'm a little nervous. I hope she didn't pick up any diseases. So far she seems fine. It's so hard. I want to take her out so badly. I need to find her a bubble. lol

Bailey just turned 11 weeks old on Tuesday. Today, she learned her second command, which is "sit". I started teaching it to her yesterday and today she caught on. I am a very proud mommy! Now if only she would catch on to potty training this fast.
So far today she hasn't had an accident in the house or in her crate. She finally started to grasp that if she rings the bells, I will take her outside. However, she doesn't only ring it when she has to use the bathroom, she rings it just because she wants to play outside.
I'm trying to teach her that the bells are only if she has to go to the bathroom. Therefore, if she rings the bells and doesn't make outside, I put her in her crate for a few minutes. If she rings the bells and actually makes outside then I let her run around on the grass or play downstairs. Hopefully, she will catch on in a few days. :)
