Arrival Story:
At the time I was interested in a playmate for my current dog Daisy (Female, Fox Terrier-Smooth). The first time I laid eyes on Sasha she reminded me of a Tasmanian devil dog. She was clearly not be touched unless you were invited too and even then you be wise to be very cautious. Apparently she suffered from alpha syndrome, and believed she was the mistress of the house no matter what the reality was. It would take 3 weeks of training before she stopped biting me. And another 3 years before she would stop biting all together. She is cautious of strangers and very protective of me. She apparently is very easy to handle when not in my presence. Training continued till she responded to voice command on and off the leash. A condition of adoption was a 6 week course in basic training. I recommend it for everyone. During the first year, it was clear cohabitation with the resident dog Daisy was becoming an issue. The infighting to get attention was my major concern between both dogs. Training tips to teach Sasha her place in the pack wasn’t working. And for Sasha it was looking like a trip back to the pound was close at hand. By chance my parents’ dog passed away that year. A family decision was made that it wouldn’t be fair to either dog to vote one off. Thus, Daisy was adopted by them. Daisy being older and less of a problem child than Sasha, the choice for my parents was clear. It’s been 6 years now since Sasha adoption. She is good with close friends and family. However, strangers beware. Even after 6 years. I still take reasonable precaution when introducing her to strangers. A “Do not pet the dog” verbal warning is provided as a courtesy to all we meet. She is leashed at all times. When visiting the Vet, they always appreciate the muzzle on the dog first before the examination begins. Newest trick for Sasha is the ‘okay’ Command. It used to be exiting the car she would be the first out the door. This usually isn’t a problem except; One, she runs me over in the process. Two, I live in an apartment setting so I am always concerned about cars and people. The process for getting out of the car now much easier these days. She will wait in the driver’s seat semi-patiently till I give the Okay command. Then she hops out and is ready to go.
