Zoe, our zany, smart , funny little girl

Zoe is just over a year old and has to be the one of the most personable dogs we have owned.

This little girl is always by my side, follows me from room to room. If you are doing something she is right there checking it out.

She greets my husband with an over exaggerated cavalier wiggle, usually with a toy in her mouth giving him a muffled “wo wo wo” as if she is telling him about her day happily wiggling around his feet. We usually can get her to “talk” by saying “tell me about it” or as my husband and daughter like to do, get her started by mimicking the “wo wo wo” to her in a low pitch. She wiggles and prances around, tail going a mile a minute telling her tale. we get a kick out of it everytime she does it.

She loves to stand on our bed with her front paws on the top of the foot board gazing at herself in the mirror. We wonder what she is thinking as her tail wags checking herself out.

With Zoe you are guaranteed that if you are lying in bed on your back she feels the need to come over before going to sleep and stand on your chest, she does this with my husband. He is usually all settled in, Cali comes over to him and sniffs him, he pats her goodnight. Meanwhile Zoe is like ”me, pat me to”. She scrambles and climbs on his chest, standing there looking and waiting for the exact moment to lick his chin. Once she accomplishes that she comes over to me and plunks herself against me and is planted solidly in that spot. Cali likes to quietly curl up on her blanket at my feet.

Cali is a little taller than Zoe. Zoe takes great joy in running under Cali, if playing she tries to throw her off balance this way. Most of the time she scoots under her to get to something, this is a little rough on Cali if they are on leashes outside!

Zoe seems to find joy in just about everything, she is rambunctious and adventuresome. She is a character and our entertainer. If you leave the room she is following you curious and boldly checking into what you are doing.

If you close a door she has her nose under the edge of the door trying to figure out what is going on in there. When I leave to run errands she is right there to greet me at the door when I return before anyone else. On shopping day she sits on the rug in front of the sink keeping me company in case I brought a present home for them..usually a treat or toy she can shred.

Cali is a little stand offish and if you want her to come to you she hesitates and approaches slowly. Zoe on the other hand runs wiggly over and leans into you, she can’t get enough hugs and pats. She runs happily,tail wagging behind you either licking your calf or stepping in your flip flops as you walk. There are times you wish she wouldn’t walk so close especially when she has a Nyla bone in her mouth and she pokes you with it.

If Cali is barking, Zoe runs to me and and sits at my feet staring up at me as if to say “I am being good, Mommy”. We are not a fan of the barking especially the high pitch one Cali does to sirens that pass, we are working on controlling it. Sometimes I am not in the room when it happens, if not Zoe comes to find me doing the good girl thing for me.

Other times if Cali barks she nudge Cali’s face with hers as if she is trying to stop her, or joins in with a muffled low bark watching me to see if I approve. As soon as I get up or head over, Zoe quick runs next to me as quiet as can be. She is kind of like that little kid that is brown nosing it to the teacher.

She is a sweetie, a joy, a bug, a teaser, a love. She keeps us laughing . As different as our two cavaliers are it seems their differences seem to balance out and they fit nicely into our lives, we love them…

Mommy says to try making these doggie cookies for your dog!

This recipe I had to come up with when Buddy was ill. He was put on a special diet and could not have any other food but what he was on…that meant no special treats! Toward the last few weeks it was one way I could get a little food into him.

So I started experimenting. The one food I was using for one dog had turkey and veggies in it and when the cookies baked it smelled like Thanksgiving. The cookies were still cooling when my husband came home, he made the remark about my baking cookies for him and he went to eat one…I could have let him “sample it” but decided to be nice and tell him he would love the treat if he had 4 legs and a tail. He quickly put the cookie down.

The other food I used was fish and potatoes, this I strongly recommend baking with ventilation and open a window. I did this on a day when no one was home, turned on the fan above the stove and opened a few windows.

The dogs love them. When Toby was declining it was a good way to get food into him since he would not eat his soft and ground dry mix. Since he rarely missed a chance for a cookie he readily took it. He was eating small bits at the end and the cookies contained all the same nutrients as his food so I gave him a few several times a day. The texture baked is different so he was felt he was getting a treat not mushy food.

This is good for dog’s with allergies on special food.

Dog Cookies Recipe WOOF!

*Either a 14 oz. or 13 oz. can of moist dog food (moisture contents 76 to 78%)

*3/4 cup dry dog food

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Cookie sheet greased (Pam or Mazola Pure Olive Oil spray works well)

Using a food processor finely grind dry dog food until it is a fine powder. Mix canned food and powder into a bowl and blend with a fork until thoroughly mixed. Mixture can be made into little balls then flattened or it can be rolled and a cookie cutter used to form shapes…I found the best way was little balls/flattened. Place the pieces onto the greased cookie sheet. No need to space them far apart they don’t spread out, but shrink a bit. One mixture can fit on one cookie sheet.

Place them in the oven for about 1 and a 1/2 hours, halfway through gently turn the cookies over. Turn oven off when cookies are hard. Time may vary, increase time and check every 5 minutes after the initial cook time if necessary. Cookies should be firm and not soft enough to push into.

When cookies are done, turn off oven and leave them in the oven for a few hours to ensure the moisture is gone, remove to cool completely (30 minutes or more) before placing into Tupperware. If you place the hot cookies into Tupperware prior to cooling completely moisture may form and cause cookies to mold. Shelf life is about 1 to 2 weeks in a closed container.

*This can be done with 2 cans of 5.5 oz. moist food to a 3/4 to 1/2 cup dry food. If using 1/2 cup dry the baking time may need to be increased to made the cookies harden completely.

Remember crunchy is good!!!!

Zoe Bug….

What can I say this little bundle of energy is she is shear funny, mischievous and a joy mixed into one. She is an AKC bred puppy raised in a family environment. She loves food, eats by herself though there was a little food aggression in the beginning but we quickly worked through it to the point if she finishes before Cali she comes and sits or lays down next to me while Cali eats.

Zoe is a clown and just one of the most expressive dogs I have ever owned. She is always under foot it seems especially in the kitchen. I can’t tell you how many time I closed my closet door with her in there because she followed me and I had no clue she was behind me. She is nosy, if you are doing something at her level she’s involved, unpacking and putting groceries away in lower cabinets, she is there head in the bag and cabinet. Cali on the other hand sits back and watches.

Give Zoe a new stuffed toy, you can bet she locates the squeaker and rips it apart in minutes to get it out. She has a thing for certain commercials on our large scene TV. It is a puzzle to us that she can figure out the shape made of words is a dog on the Celebrex ad, she growls at it every time. She barks at the rooster on the Ambiance ad every time that comes on. The one that gets us the most is the ad of the big nostrils and little men are spraying allergy spray into it…she growls barks and stands up for that one. We just laugh, if she is in the room and the ad comes on and she doesn’t see it right away we are like wait for it and sure enough the barking begins. Crazy girl.

She doesn’t mind her manners, if she wants to lay down, it doesn’t seem to matter to her if it is partly on you or on top of Cali, boom she is there to stay. She is still a puppy at just a year and I can see her maturing and calming down but this one is going to take a little longer. She loves frogs and chases the one that frequents our pool in the evening, she has come close to not stopping in time almost falling in. Boundless energy and love for the thrill in life.

We recently put hardwood flooring in, she thought it was so great, running and sliding around like she was re enacting the scene with Tom Cruise sliding across the floors in Reckless to the song “Foot loose”. It was cute until I heard a crash, upon going into the room to see what happened, she had slid into the glass table that was on felt pads and knocked it against the couch, a vase had fallen over and there she stood upright, legs spread with a look like “yeah man..do it again”. She is tiny in build but strong and solid. If anything hopped, crawled across the yard she is nose down tracking, Cali is good at it also but Zoe is fast. She is happy go lucky, wild and zany but so attached to Cali, they sleep together curled up against me. She follows Cali around, jumps on her, licks her face, pulls her ears. Cali tolerates it like a mommy dog but when enough is enough she lets Zoe know.

After dinner they run through the house and we just laugh, they are so bonded and matched perfectly even though each is so different. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Our girls, love them.

Zoe had a baby bunny encounter

Zoe had her first close encounter with a bunny last night. I took both dogs out at 10 before bed. I noticed a tiny baby bunny in the grass and walked the dogs away so they would not notice. Zoe being Zoe was running around and ended up straddling the tiny bunny and didn’t realize it. There Zoe was with this little bundle of gray fluff about the size of my fist sitting directly under her belly and she was oblivious to it.

The bunny ran out from in between her front legs. Zoe jumped and ran to me pawing my legs panicked…like what the heck was that, pick me up quick. It was so funny. If Cali had seen it she would have darted after it and tracked it were it ran but she was distracted looking at something else in the yard.

By the way…I would like to know why it is that dogs are attracted to and eat bunny poop like it was candy. It is gross, I have put Tabasco sauce on it, sprayed it with Lysol, sprayed it with bitter spray but they still seem to find it somewhere else in the yard. Definitely not getting a goodnight kiss from them after they snack on that
