Dogs serve a wide variety of purposes and fit in differently depending on their families. Some folks buy dogs they aren’t compatible with and don’t even know until it is too late. After all, some dogs are family dogs, and others are simply not up for that lifestyle.

The good thing about little dogs is most of them are highly connected to their owners, looking to them for support and care. We rounded up some of the top small dog breeds that we think make the best matches for family life, but also anything you might consider that might make it a bust for the breed.

1. Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher certainly has an interesting look. It’s sure to make your kids giggle with excitement. These Chewbacca-looking little dogs can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion! The Affenpinscher is a true toy dog, weighing between 7 and 10 pounds when fully grown.

Temperament

The Affenpinscher is known for being affectionate and lovable, but only when they want to be! These dogs have a very quick temper and can get downright irritated if things don’t go their way. These dogs definitely think that they rule the roost, so they aren’t for the weak of heart.

These dogs require training and early socialization to respond well to other animals. However, they typically act pretty well with people in the home.

Compatibility

The Affenpinscher is known for their curiosity and fun-loving nature. However, these dogs can be very challenging as they are incredibly strong-willed. Their independent nature makes them quite hard to train, so they are best for experienced owners.

The Alaskan Klee Kai is considered a small breed dog, even though they’re towards the larger end of the scale. When they are fully grown, these dogs weigh between 15 and 20 pounds.

Temperament

The Alaskan Klee Kai has quite an interesting personality. These dogs are certainly pack animals so they bond very intensely with their human caretakers. Temperament

The Boston Terrier is generally a very playful, lovable dog. They can develop nervous tendencies if they aren’t properly socialized, so exposing them to multiple situations early on is important.

One of the most well-known small dog breeds, the tiny Chihuahua is perfect for most families. These spunky and hilarious little dogs are full of personality. They only weigh up to about 6 pounds, so they’re the epitome of a small dog breed.

Temperament

Chihuahuas are some of the spunkiest and feistiest little dogs you could ever come across. They can be full of energy one minute and totally relaxed and sleepy the next. You truly never know what they’re going to do next. They’re also extremely vocal, barking at the tiniest little noise!

Chihuahuas love attention from everyone, but they tend to bond more closely with one member of the household. They can be prone to separation anxiety, but these dogs are so tiny that it is easy for you to carry them with you everywhere you go.

Compatibility

Chihuahuas are compatible with most families, but we recommend them for families with older children over families with younger children. Chihuahuas can be touchy, so they may not appreciate little kids grabbing at them and trying to play with them if they don’t want to be played with.

Although their bark is worse than their bite, we don’t want anyone getting bit! But Chihuahuas tend to get along well with other pets and they’re good companions for retired people.


9. Dachshund

Who doesn’t love the dashing little wiener dog? These dogs have gotten recognition due to their extra-long bodies and tiny little legs. Originally used for digging into the tunnels of prey, these dogs can weasel their way through any tight squeeze, and they love to do so! Standard size Dachshunds usually weigh 16 to 32 downs, while miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or under.

Temperament

The Dachshund could be described as bold, brave, and always ready. These little dogs make fantastic alert dogs, because they never miss a beat. Even though they can be a little spicy from time to time, they generally are very good natured and love their people.

With larger dogs, a Dachshund might be a little bossy or intolerant, but rarely outwardly aggressive.

Compatibility

Even though French Bulldogs don’t get very tall, they weigh a little more than most small dogs at 16 to 28 pounds. Their bulky, muscular structure really adds to it, making them miniature bulldozers.

Temperament

French Bulldogs are ecstatic about life. There is very little that upsets them and they roll with it like no other. They can get a little territorial and mouthy from time to time, but their bark is far bigger than their bite. The French Bulldog makes friends wherever they go and gets a lot of attention from people. This is one of the more expensive dog breeds, but also one of the most popular.

Compatibility

Just about anybody as compatible with a French Bulldog! The only downfall to them is that they can sometimes exhibit a little bit of territorial aggression towards other pets. This is frowned upon, but not necessarily typical.

These dogs tend to love children and strangers, soaking up any little bit of attention they could possibly get. They are cute and they know it. These little dogs can make fantastic dogs for families, however, they are expensive up front and they can have pretty pricey health issues as well.


11. Havanese

The hairy Havanese steals hearts all over. These good-natured pups are perfect for potentially any family, especially if you have kids. The more attention, the better! The Havanese is a very small dog, weighing only 7 to 13 pounds. These favorable weights make them acceptable for most living situations.

Temperament

The Havanese has an award-winning personality. These little dogs are quiet, agreeable, and gentle. They check all the boxes to what makes a small companion dog fantastic. They are smart enough to learn basic concepts, but they aren’t designed for any special training purpose. Don’t let that stop you from challenging your Havanese’s mind, as they can usually be trained pretty easily.

Compatibility

The cheerful Havanese is a happy go lucky little dog that is certainly attached to their owners. Known as Velcro dogs, these pups were designed for their companionship potential. These dogs get incredibly attached to their owners and prefer to be with them at all times.

This is certainly not the kind of dog you can have if you leave home for long periods of time. They enjoy being part of your every waking moment and can develop separation anxiety if they are left alone for long periods of time.

12. Italian Greyhound

You might not think it at first, but the Italian Greyhound can make a fantastic family companion. Even though these dogs are known for their speed, they are incredibly lazy around the house, making them perfect cuddle buddies.

The Italian Greyhound is much taller than they are wide. They stand roughly 15 inches tall and only get between 7 and 14 pounds as adults.

Temperament

Don’t get us wrong. The Italian Greyhound loves to be on the move. They will enjoy exercise sessions where they can emit short bursts of energy. However, these dogs tend to be very relaxed, affectionate, and good-natured in the home.

These dogs love to be mentally and physically stimulated and have a very agile stance. These dogs can even be a bit mischievous, but in a comical way. They might look innocent and meek on the outside, but there’s a ton of unexpected personality on the inside.

Compatibility

We love the Italian Greyhound but we cannot recommend them for homes with young children. These dogs tend to be a little bit reserved and young children might frighten or disturb them. However, if you have older children that are familiar with how to act around dogs, then Italian Greyhounds are a great small dog to have!


13. Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin looks like you took the adorable long hair of the Papillon and mixed it with the smushy face of the Pug. This tiny breed is definitely dignified in nature and they also make wonderful pets! The Japanese Chin stays relatively small, weighing between 7 and 11 pounds as adults.

Temperament

Interestingly, some dog fanciers might explain the Japanese Chin as being almost catlike. They tend to be very independent, intelligent, and not overly reliant on their owners for constant stimulation. These dogs tend to be very alert and loyal in the home setting.

If you’re looking for a small dog but hate the idea of having a shadow, these dogs might solve that potential problem.

Compatibility

Pugs weigh between 14 and 18 pounds as adults. These dogs are prone to weight gain, so make sure they are getting enough exercise, or those wrinkles will turn into fat rolls before your eyes!

Temperament

Pugs are playful, good-natured pups that take advantage of a good snooze where they can. These dogs make beyond amazing family companions and work well with children, other pets, and seniors.

Pugs make excellent alert dogs. These pups notice any odd goings-on around the house and you’re the first to know! However, their bark is definitely bigger than their bite in this case, so you can take it from there!

Compatibility

Pugs make excellent companions for all people. These dogs have no issue getting along with strangers and friends alike and they meet life with a glass-half-full mentality every time. These dogs work well with other pets and rarely exhibit any aggressive tendencies.

The only negative we can think of is that these dogs are brachycephalic and have dense wrinkles. The facial structure might cause breathing issues and you have to be careful in extreme temperatures. The wrinkles might also collect debris and be a pain to clean out.


21. Shih Tzu
