Are Dobermans Good Running Partners? Vet-Verified Facts & FAQ

doberman pincher exercise

It isn’t uncommon for a potential dog owner to choose a pet that enjoys doing the same things that they do. Elderly people may choose pups that don’t require much exercise and prefer lounging on the couch. Those who love the outdoors tend to lean toward breeds that are athletic and adventurous.

If you’re a runner and curious about whether a Doberman Pinscher would make the perfect companion, wonder no more. Thanks to their powerful body, a Doberman can make an excellent running partner for those who enjoy taking long treks. They can even handle long runs of up to 5 miles. Read on to learn more about Dobermans and their athleticism so you can determine whether this is the running partner for you.

The Amazing Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman was bred by a tax collector in Germany during the 19th century. During this time, a tax collector was not a welcome sight. In hopes of keeping himself safe while on the job, a tax collector and dog breeder by the name of Louis Dobermann decided that he wanted a dog that was large and imposing. The result, which included the Black and Tan Terrier, German Pinscher, Rottweiler, and smooth-coated herding dogs, was a larger version of the Doberman Pinscher that we know today.

The reputation of the Doberman grew quickly, and they became royalty in the world of working-class dogs. Since then, they have worked with the police, been used as therapy dogs, worked as service dogs, been part of search-and-rescue missions, and have excelled in the competitive sports ring. They have even been to war. Their muscular bodies, imposing stature, and loyalty to their owners make these dogs ideal for protection tasks, including as at-home watchdogs.

Why Dobermans Make Great Running Companions

While the Dobermans may normally be used to send threats running in fear, they are also highly energetic. When it comes to spending time with their owners, they are great companions. In fact, Dobermans are affectionate, loving, and sweet during family hours. The energy and power that they possess make them an ideal breed for running.

The Doberman is also considered a fast dog. They can run with you for up to 5 miles at a time. They can also reach top speeds of 35 MPH. Many believe them to be second to only the Greyhound in terms of speediest breeds. Their muscular build and sleek body make them ideal for life as a companion to a runner.

When Can My Doberman Start Running With Me?

If you choose a Doberman as your puppy and running partner, it only makes sense that you want to get out on the road as soon as possible. Unfortunately, that’s not the best course of action. A Doberman isn’t considered fully developed until they are between 18 months of age and 2 years old. If you attempt to run your dog too hard, too early, you can easily damage their growing body and cause injuries.

When the time is right, here are a few tips to make running with your Doberman beneficial to both of you.

The 4 Tips for Running With Your Doberman

1. Introduce Running Slowly

You can’t expect your Doberman to take off on a 5-mile run on their first day out. Instead, you should start slowly. Teach your dog the commands that you expect them to follow when you’re running. Once you feel they are responding well, start with walks, then increase to light jogs. If things continue to go well, you can work your way up.

2. Keep a Close Eye on Your Dog

As you and your Doberman run together more, you’ll be able to read their mannerisms. Dobermans are energetic working dogs and may overexert themselves. It’s up to you to take note of this. If you see your dog slowing down, whimpering, or showing other signs of exhaustion, it’s time to take them home for a bit of rest.

3. Keep It Positive

Always praise your dog when you’re out on a run. The last thing you want is for your dog to think they are being punished by being forced to run. If you ensure they are having fun, they will want to continue to do this activity with you.

4. Don’t Choose a Doberman Just for Running

While the idea of choosing a breed that makes a great running partner is appealing, don’t make that your only criterion when it comes to choosing a dog. The Doberman Pinscher is a proud, noble breed. They indeed do amazing when it comes to running and exercising, but there’s more to them than that. A Doberman is a people-oriented pup. They need plenty of attention from their owner and love to be praised, and they will keep you happy and protected in return. Having an athletic running partner that can keep up with your longest runs is just a bonus.

Conclusion

If you are interested in the Doberman Pinscher and are an avid runner, you can plan to take them along for the ride. This breed is built for active lifestyles and can make a great partner if this is the type of life that you lead. Just remember to make sure your Doberman is well cared for, whether you’re at home or out and about. Offer them plenty of water and rest during your outings, and they will make your runs fun and rewarding.
