I am a four-eyed dog-lover on a budget. In 2011, after a three-month-old Ace ate my $400 pair of glasses right off my face, I never bought designer frames again. I have used several popular online glasses companies, with varying levels of success. Some of these companies allow you to try on sample glasses at home before making your purchase, while others ask you to upload a photo of yourself to try glasses on virtually. Just pick your frames and upload a copy of your glasses prescription, and within a few weeks you’ve got a new pair of glasses at a fraction of the cost of buying designer frames from your optometrist.
Fetch Eyewear is one such company, with prescription glasses setting you back a slim $125 for lenses plus frames. Fetch Eyewear is unique because they donate all their profits to the Pixie Project, a non-profit animal adoption center and rescue in Portland, Oregon. The Pixie Project does a lot of great things for animals across Oregon, including offering free or low-cost spay and neuter to homeless and low-income pet owners. By purchasing yourself some new, fashionable, inexpensive glasses, you are also donating to animal rescue. Brilliant!
The Fetch Eyewear website provides a wealth of information to make a first-time buyer feel at ease. Compared to other online glasses companies, I found the Fetch Eyewear website to be one of the easiest to use. I like the presentation of their products, which look fashionable and modern. I do wish they featured more photos of people wearing the glasses from different angles, as this would help me visualize what the glasses would look like on my face.
I also appreciate that Fetch Eyewear offers some safeguards in case your glasses get eaten by your dog or otherwise destroyed. They will replace the frame if it is damaged, regardless of the reason. This includes damage from getting your frame adjusted in an optical store. Also, you have the option to have new lenses put into your old Fetch Eyewear frame if your prescription changes.
I ordered six sample frames to try on at home. It was difficult to choose which frames to try! For each frame, the frame’s measurements are presented at the bottom of the page, which I compared to my old glasses to estimate the fit. I also reviewed the Find Your Fit page, which provides tips on which glasses are best for various face shapes, skin tones, and hair and eye colors.
The sample frames arrived in a simple brown box. They are exactly the same frames you would receive if you ordered prescription glasses, except they include clear plastic lenses. I found each pair of glasses to be well made of quality acetate (plastic), with rich colors and sturdy hardware. After trying each pair on several times, and staring too long at my face in the mirror, I decided that the Sadie (in Olive Tortoise) was right for me. I like the shape, the color, and the quality of these frames.
Fetch Eyewear sent me a complimentary pair of Sadie glasses in my prescription for this review. They arrived in a nice glasses case with a glasses cleansing cloth printed with a cat design. My glasses were exactly like the sample frames I tried before. Since I used a new prescription, it has been a little weird getting used to these glasses, but the fit and style are fantastic, and I am confident my eyes will adjust.
