Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix

While not as well-known as some other designer breeds today, the Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix is slowly coming into its own. Also known as the Shar Cane, the dog is a mix between a Cane Corso and a Chinese Shar Pei. The breed inherits a lot of characteristics from its parents, meaning it’s loyal, affectionate, and protective, as well as loving and active.

Although they’re exceptional pets, Shar Canes are not the best companions for first-time owners. Because of their energetic, independent nature, they’re better for experienced dog owners who’ve owned large breeds.

Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix Breed Puppies

Finding a Cane Corso Shar Pei mix is challenging. It’s a rare hybrid, but you may have luck by contacting Doberman and Vizsla breeders. Purebred Cane Corso puppies can cost $1,500 to $2,000, but Shar Peis are less expensive. For a Cane Corso Shar Pei mix, you’ll pay less, but the price could hover near $1,000.

You’re unlikely to find many Shar Canes at shelters, but it’s worth checking into because some pet owners take their pups to shelters when they cannot handle their behavior. Remember, however, that the costs to purchase the dog aren’t the only costs you’ll incur, so make sure you’re financially ready to take care of your furry friend before deciding to give the puppy a forever home.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix 🧠

Cane Corso Shar Pei Puppies have the same temperaments as their parents for the most part. They are loyal, intelligent, affectionate, and extremely vigilant regarding their families. The puppies are easy to train and super eager to please.

However, they are also willful and independent, meaning they need an experienced dog owner to take control and train them the right way.

Are These Dogs Good for Families 👪

Cane Corso Sar Pei Puppies make great family pets for families who have older children. However, since they are big dogs, having them around younger children is not recommended without constant supervision. They are loyal to a fault but can easily knock over a smaller child and cause injuries, even though they don’t mean to.

A Shar Cane needs to be taught how to control their excitement and energy around younger children, so you’ll need to socialize and train the puppy early on.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets 🐶 😽

Since the Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix gets its guard dog tendencies from its parents, they tend to be standoffish with strangers and other animals. If the dog is raised in a home with other pets, it’s less likely to injure those pets. However, they need to be socialized and trained to be around other animals.

Give your dog time to adjust to any other four-legged animals you bring into the house, and take time introducing the animals, so they don’t get overwhelmed. It’s best to watch them closely when they are playing with other animals and children due to their large size.

Things to Know When Owning a Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix

Now that you know more about the Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix, you may be ready to search for your own. We’ll give you a few requirements and tips below.

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

The Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix will do best on a high-quality, high-protein diet. High-energy canines typically need more protein to provide enough fuel for their activities. It’s best to feed an age-appropriate diet, and when your Shar Cane reaches adulthood, it will require at least 4 to 5 cups of kibble or the equivalent in wet food.

Since the Cane Corso is susceptible to bloat, your puppy may be as well, meaning you should avoid this by feeding your dog small meals throughout the day instead of larger meals or free feeding. Since the parents are prone to obesity, be sure to account for treats when you calculate how much to feed them.

Exercise 🐕

Your Cane Corso Shar Pei puppy will need plenty of exercise and a fenced-in yard to run in. Small apartments or tiny outdoor shelters are inappropriate for the dog’s mental and physical health. It’s best if you can exercise your dog for at least an hour a day, and in addition to long walks, your dog can participate in agility sports and simple games like playing fetch.

Training 🎾

The Cane Corso Shar Pei is eager to please and easy to train. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t take advantage of a lax trainer. That is why we recommend you be an experienced dog owner if you give one of these dogs a forever home.

The dog can be willful, so if you can’t handle it, setting up classes with a professional trainer is the next best thing. You’ll participate in the training sessions, and in addition to teaching your dog to follow commands and behave, you’ll strengthen your bond with your dog.

Grooming ✂️

The Cane Corso and the Chinese Shar Pei have similar coats and require moderate grooming. The Shar Cane will have short hair like its parents, but it’s best to brush its hair at least two or three times a week to remove loose hair and debris. Its teeth should be brushed twice a week, and its nails must be trimmed regularly, depending on how fast they’re ground down from running outside on hard surfaces.

You don’t have to bathe the Cane Corso Shar Pei often unless they get filthy playing outside, but you should try to bathe it about every 7 weeks.

Health and Conditions ❤️ 🏥

There are quite a few conditions that your Cane Corso Shar Pei puppy can inherit from its parents.

Minor Conditions

  • Mange
  • Eye problems
  • Epilepsy

Serious Conditions

  • Bloat
  • Obesity
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia

Male vs. Female

Shar Cane males are slightly larger than females, but they have similar temperaments. To prevent the undesirable behavior associated with going into heat or finding a mate, it’s best to have your puppy fixed.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix

Since the Cane Corso Shar Pei is relatively new, there aren’t many unique facts published about them. However, the Shar Pei and Cane Corsos are ancient breeds with a colorful past.

1. The Shar Cane Requires Moderate Temperatures

Since Shar Pei Dogs and Cane Corsos don’t do well in the heat or tolerate cold temperatures well, it stands to reason that their offspring will require moderate temperatures as well. Their short hair does not provide much protection from the elements.

2. One of Its Parents Was a Warrior

The Cane Corso is an excellent companion for the right owner, but it has a long, bloody history. The Romans used the Cane Corso’s ancestors in battle when they conquered the Greek Islands.

3. The Puppy Almost Didn’t Exist

Both the Cane Corso and Shar Pei came close to extinction. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Chinese Shar Pei was considered the rarest breed in the world.

Conclusion

The Cane Corso Shar Pei Mix is a gorgeous dog that is friendly, loving, and very vigilant. They inherit a host of desirable traits from their parents, which means that though they are eager to please, they can also be quite willful and independent.

They’re ideal for experienced owners who’ve trained large breeds in the past. Because they’re active pups, Shar Canes need a large yard to burn off energy and active owners who enjoy exercising outdoors.
