This unique combination is thanks in large part to the customizable features within the app. The ability to set a “safety area” geofence allows you to place a virtual circle around your home ground. When your dog is inside this zone, battery life is preserved, and tracking is kept to a minimum.
To further save battery, you can also set power-saving areas within the reach of your local. Wifi network. Anytime the network is nearby, GPS position reporting is disabled, preserving battery life. You can even enable airplane mode when the collar is in its power-saving area to reduce battery use to almost zero.

My Experience
To test this product, I enlisted the help of Bo, a three-year-old white Lab who loves to go on adventures. While Bo isn’t much of an escape artist—and probably wouldn’t go far from home if he did get out—he does spend plenty of time walking off-leash on local trails and camping in the mountains.
Setting up the Weenect XT was super easy. To my great relief, it required no complicated Wifi connections or pairing via Bluetooth. Instead, after downloading the app, all I had to do was use my camera to scan the code on the back of the tracker, and the device automatically connected to my account.
From there, I spent some time setting up the app, which included confirming my home location, adding safety zones, adding my Wifi network, and setting my tracking and notification preferences.
One thing of note that I discovered during this step is that the smallest safe zone radius is 82 feet. On the map, this encompasses my entire house, yard, and a good portion of my neighbor’s yard and the green space. This is one reason I believe this product is best suited for dogs living on larger acreage lots who have a lot of room to roam to begin with.
From there, I tested out the many working modes of the tracker. The airplane mode option, in addition to the power-saving (Wifi detection) mode, significantly reduced battery usage. However, I found that the “exit home” alerts were delayed when this mode was active.
The next step was to test the tracking abilities. I did this during a camping trip and during multiple off-leash walks near my home.
The tracker worked very well in both situations—as long as there was cell service. During the camping trip, there was one location without any cell service where the tracking feature, predictably, didn’t work at all. Even in my own neighborhood, I ran into problems with delayed location conveyance in one obnoxious dead zone on the walking trail.
I learned that if the tracker passes through an area with little or no coverage during a walk, it can lose its connection and then struggle to reconnect automatically – even once you’re back home. This is why it may only start updating again after a manual restart or after several hours. Although the tracker can theoretically connect to other networks, it will automatically use the strongest signal available.
But when cell service was strong, I was very impressed with this device’s tracking abilities. I can see how the Superlive feature, especially, would be useful in a lost dog situation. This feeds constant updates to your phone, allowing you to track not just where your dog currently is, but where they have been and what direction they are heading.
This combined with the very nifty feature that shows your phone on the map—and, importantly, which direction your phone is facing—makes it incredibly easy to orient yourself so you can find your dog as quickly as possible.
For owners living in rural or suburban areas who have a dog prone to wandering off, who fear their escape artist might bolt if they get free, or who like hiking, camping, or exploring in cell-covered areas, this GPS dog tracker is absolutely worth investing in.
