Rez is fairly new to Dogster but considering his life, he’s lucky to be with us at all. I read his story in one of the groups and had to pass it on. Be warned, it has a good ending for Rez but not all of his buddies.

It’s a hard story to read but it’s the reality for many dogs where Rez came from.

Hi everybody. My name is Rez, because my mom recently rescued me from a nearby Indian reservation near Cortez, Colorado where she helps the local humane society with a spay/neuter clinic. There were hundreds of stray dogs living there with me, and my mom helps round them up and get them fixed so the problem doesn’t keep getting worse. There’s a new animal control officer, and he drives around everyday and shoots dogs from his truck. Lots of my friends had already been killed.

I was smart enough to hang around the mobile vet a while back during a clinic (they have treats for us) and I guess I did something right, because at the end of the day my new mom opened up her car and told me to get in! I got fresh water and a great dinner – and not even from a trash can!

There’s a lot of things that are happening to me that are new – brushing, a nice lady called a vet, toys to play with and things they call bones which I love. I also have 13 little brothers and sisters called
dachshunds. I love them all.

Everyday I am so happy to be here and give my new folks lots of wags and kisses. My mom says I’m the smartest dog she’s ever had. I don’t know why – all I do is what she shows me – I learned not to jump up on people the first day I was here, and then things like come and sit and shake. These things are easy, and I don’t think they make me smart. I think the thing that made me smart is getting in the car that day! I’m just sorry to say that hundreds of my other dog pals were not so lucky.
