New Test Could Detect Cancer In Dogs Earlier
(KDKA) PITTSBURGH Veterinarian experts say a new test may be able to detect cancer earlier in dogs.PetScreen Limited, an England-based company, developed a blood test and according to Dr. Mike Hutchinson, its pretty accurate.
One sample one millimeter of blood which is like a fifth of a teaspoon is enough to run this test to detect with 84 percent sensitivity – that’s incredible,” he said.
KDKAs John Cater reports when cancer is detected, different chemotherapeutic agents will be tested.
So now we don’t have to do the shotgun treatments that cause all the side effects, the nausea the hair loss, the sickness and the infections now we can say this dog only requires this chemotherapy and it will kill that cell,” explained Dr. Hutchinson.
According to statistics, one out of every four dogs will develop cancer.
Dr. Hutchinson says the test should cost about $200.
Its believed the same type of test may eventually be used in the detection and treatment of cancer in humans.
