Two men, woman face dog fighting charges
COTTAGE HILLS – Three alleged dog fighters came up one chromosome short Sunday of convincing Madison County sheriff’s deputies that mating pit bulls made the noises that disturbed a Cottage Hills neighborhood.
Two men and a woman now are charged with dog fighting after deputies determined both injured dogs were female, Lt. John Lakin said Monday.
Lakin said Sunday was the second time since March 25 that deputies discovered dog fighting at 2XX Edwardsville St. in Cottage Hills.
“The only time we’ve dealt with dog fighting recently was at the same house,” Lakin said. “Now that we’ve had a second, they’re certainly on our radar.”
Deputies went to the house after 8 p.m. Sunday because of an anonymous complaint.
The three first told deputies the dogs were bleeding because they had become aggressive during mating. After both dogs checked out to be female, they claimed a male dog had been there and left, Lakin said.
Madison County Circuit Judge Charles V. Romani Jr. on Monday set bails for the three at $50,000 each.
The dogs were picked up by the Madison County animal control officers.
