Dog shot in robbery safe in recovery
By William Brand, STAFF WRITER

OAKLAND Things are looking better for Buffy, the
7-year-old German shepherd shot last week when the dog tried to save her master during a robbery in front of his house near 96th Avenue and Olive Street in East Oakland.

The gunman shot Buffy in the leg with a large caliber handgun and fled in a waiting car, leaving the loyal dog lying in the driveway, blood gushing from her body.

Buffy remains at Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro, her owner, Will Bartley, said Saturday. “Last night, it still looked bad; she wouldn’t drink water or eat anything even the chicken we brought her special. She loves chicken,” he said.

Veterinarians told Bartley that if she keeps getting stronger, they can possibly do surgery on Buffy soon. She was shot at the crook of her leg and the surgeons want to try to fuse bones together to save her limb, he said. “In the worse case, they’ll have to amputate,” he said. “But I’m so happy she’s doing better that it’s made my day,” Bartley said.

Police are offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Call police at (510) 238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at (510) 238-6946 with information.
