Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Abound food a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Abound is a relatively new dog food brand that was launched in 2014. This company is owned by Kroger and is marketed as their newest store brand of dog food. Their recipes offer natural ingredients with no corn, wheat, or soy, and the food also does not have any artificial flavors, preservatives, or by-products. The manufacturer works with a team of food scientists and nutritionists to develop high-quality pet food to ensure it is complete and balanced.

In addition to dog and puppy food, they produce jerky treats, dental chews, elk antlers, and cat food and treats. In this article, we’ll review a few of Abound’s recipes and delve deeper into this brand to help you decide if it’s suitable for your canine.

    Abound Dog Food Reviewed

Who Makes Abound and Where Is It Produced?

Kroger1 owns Abound, but a third-party manufacturer makes the food. We want to point out that even though Kroger owns the brand, we cannot tell you who the manufacturer is or where they source their ingredients. The company seems vague about this type of information, and we feel consumers should know exactly what’s in their dog’s food and where it came from.

Which Types of Dogs Is Abound Best Suited For?

Abound dog food is suited for all dogs and all breeds. They produce adult recipes and a puppy recipe, and they have grain-free or grain-inclusive recipes. Before switching your dog’s food, we recommend checking with your veterinarian first to ensure it’s safe to do so.

Which Types of Dogs Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

Abound lists healthy ingredients on their labels, such as real protein as the first ingredient, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fruits and veggies. Their food is suitable for all dogs, but if you have a dog with a medical issue, you should consult your vet before trying any new dog food.

If your dog does well on this food and you shop at Kroger, you can buy the food while you shop. If your dog has tummy issues or skin allergies, you can always try a special formula, such as Hills’ Science Diet, but you should check with your vet first.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

    Meats

Dogs are considered omnivores, meaning they need meat but can also eat fruits, veggies, and grains. Abound lists real meat as the first ingredient in their recipes, such as real salmon and real chicken. Again, we do not know where these meats are sourced from, but representatives from Kroger claim that they source all ingredients from within the United States. Salmon2 provides excellent omega-fatty acids for healthy skin and coat and is a high-quality ingredient.

    Fruits and Veggies

A dog primarily needs meat more than fruits and veggies, but fruits and veggies provide vitamins and minerals3 that contribute to a domesticated dog’s health. Fruits and veggies support the immune system, and Abound adds sweet potatoes, blueberries, cranberries, pumpkin, and eggs. Cranberries and blueberries are excellent sources of antioxidants4, which can help with inflammation.

    Grains and Grain-Free

Abound has grain-free and grain-inclusive formulas. The grains in the puppy recipe are brown rice and whole-ground barley. Abound has two recipes that have salmon and sweet potato, with one being a grain-free option. The grain-free formula has garbanzo beans and peas.

The Superfood Blend Salmon and Sweet Potato recipe contains Brewer’s Rice, which is a controversial ingredient. Brewer’s rice is a carbohydrate that some claim is a good source of energy5 for your dog, while others claim it’s a filler with little to no nutritional value. Brewers’ rice is often used for brewing beer, and this component can be recycled to be put into animal feed. After brewing, it still holds nutritional value for dogs.

A Quick Look at Abound Dog Food

    Pros
    • Real meat is first ingredient
    • No corn, wheat, or soy
    • No by-products
    • Contains high-quality ingredients
    Cons
    • A little expensive
    • Third-party manufacturer of unknown origin
    • Ingredient outsource unknown

    Recall History

Abound had a recall on their Chicken and Brown Rice recipe in 2018 due to elevated levels of vitamin D. The high levels caused some dogs to become ill with unpleasant symptoms, such as vomiting, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, increased thirst, increased urination, and weight loss. In extreme and rare cases, elevated vitamin D can cause kidney failure.

Abound has not had a recall since 2018.

Reviews of the Best Abound Dog Food Recipes

To break down Abound’s recipes even further, you will find three of their recipes below. We’ll examine each one and lay out the specifics.

    1. Abound Superfood Blend Dry Food

Abound Superfood Blend Natural Adult Dog Dry Food

Abound Superfood Blend Dry Food seems to be the most popular formula. This superfood blend consists of salmon as the first ingredient, followed by brewer’s rice, barley, chicken meal, and oatmeal. Eggs are also included for an extra jolt of protein. It also has pumpkins for smooth digestion, prebiotics, and probiotics. It contains all the nutrients dogs require without corn, wheat, soy, or by-products. This recipe is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Many complain about the price at other locations, but if you live near a Kroger, the price will be much cheaper by buying the food directly from them. Some consumers claim the Superfood Blend has a pungent odor, and others claim it gave their dog diarrhea. It contains chicken meal, and if your dog has a chicken allergy, it may cause digestive issues.

    Pros
    • Salmon is the first ingredient
    • Contains prebiotics and probiotics
    • No corn, soy, wheat, or by-products
    • Contains essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
    Cons
    • More expensive at locations other than Kroger
    • Food has a pungent odor
    • May cause digestive issues
    • Contains chicken meal, which may not work for chicken allergies

    2. Abound Chicken and Rice Puppy Food

Abound Grain Free Natural Dry Puppy Dog Food

This Abound Chicken and Rice Puppy Recipe has 27% protein to help your pup grow strong. Real chicken is the first ingredient, and it contains DHA for brain and retinal development. It contains wholesome grains, such as brown rice and oatmeal, and it’s complete and balanced with antioxidants, such as blueberries and cranberries. Like all Abound recipes, this puppy formula does not contain wheat, soy, corn, by-products, artificial flavors, or preservatives.

It is not grain-free, despite Amazon’s title on this particular formula, as it contains brown rice. Another common complaint is the price, which you can buy cheaper through Kroger if you live near one.

    Pros
    • High in protein
    • Real chicken is first ingredient
    • Complete and balanced
    • Contains DHA
    Cons
    • Can buy cheaper through Kroger
    • Not grain-free, despite the title on Amazon

    What Other Users Are Saying

For the most part, Abound has more positive reviews than negative ones. The positives are that dogs love the smell and taste of the food and scarf it down. Some report that their dogs have no gastric issues while eating this food, and it has helped some dogs with itchy skin and influenced a healthy coat.

A common complaint is the price at other locations, especially for a 4-pound bag. Some dogs also have upset stomachs after eating Abound formulas. As pet owners, we always double-check with Amazon buyer reviews before buying something. You can read the reviews here.

    Summing Up

Abound dog food seems to have all the necessary components for healthy dog food, and its recipes meet the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional standards. A big drawback is not knowing exactly where the company outsources the ingredients, and we don’t know who manufactures this brand for Kroger. The price also seems to be an issue in other locations.

However, even though we don’t know who the manufacturer is, the company states that a team of food scientists and nutritionists formulate the food to make it 100% complete and balanced without corn, wheat, soy, or by-products. A feature we always look for in high-quality food is the first ingredient, and Abound uses real protein. They also make treats and chews for dogs and cats.
