From Grief to Gratitude: How One “Potato” and a Road Trip Changed Everything

From Grief to Gratitude_ How One _Potato_ and a Road Trip Changed Everything 5

The “COVID Puppy” phenomenon is a well-known chapter of the pandemic, but for Alexis Walling, the arrival of a tiny, wrinkled English Bulldog named Buckley wasn’t just a trend—it was a lifeline.

Living in Hoboken, NJ, Alexis had reached a breaking point. Before the world locked down, she had already said goodbye to her father. Then, as the pandemic took hold, she lost her mother to the virus. Suddenly, the structure of her life as a Speech Language Pathologist in a school setting vanished. She was single, grieving, and navigating a world that felt unrecognizable.

Growing up, dogs weren’t part of the picture because of her mother’s fears, but in the silence of isolation, Alexis found herself drawn to a “squish of a potato” who would eventually help her find her way again.

The Spark of DoggieRoadTrippin’

Buckley didn’t just join the family; he got Alexis out of the house. What began as quiet drives to clear her head evolved into a mission. Together, they started scouting the Northeast with friends and family, seeking out places where “PAWrents” and their pups were genuinely welcome.

As Alexis shared these moments on Instagram, something clicked. People weren’t just double-tapping a cute dog; they were connecting with a story of resilience. What started as a personal healing journey blossomed into @DoggieRoadTrippin, a vibrant community dedicated to exploring life with four paws by your side.

A Legacy of Love and Adventure

The heart of DoggieRoadTrippin’ is built on deep roots. While the platform grew, Alexis faced further heartbreak with the loss of her brother, Brian, in 2025. Brian had been the ultimate champion of their adventures—a dog lover who acted as a sounding board for content ideas and even surprised her by putting the Doggie Road Trippin’ logo on custom sweatshirts.

Every mile Alexis and Buckley clock now carries that legacy. It’s not just about a pretty photo or video; it’s about honoring the connections that keep us moving forward.

Removing the Guesswork for Pet Parents

We’ve all been there: you drive an hour to a “dog-friendly” brewery only to find out pups are restricted to a tiny, gravel corner in the sun. Alexis’s frustration as a first-time dog mom turned into the platform’s greatest strength: Total Transparency.

DoggieRoadTrippin’ has become a growing guide for the Northeast, covering New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Vermont (with the rest of New England in their sights!).

When Alexis and Buckley review a spot, they answer the questions that actually matter:

  • The Indoor Factor: Can Buckley come inside, or is it patio-only?
  • The “Pup-perks”: Are there water bowls, treats, or even a dedicated dog menu?
  • The Vibe Check: Is it high-energy chaos or a laid-back lounge?
  • Logistics: Is there shade? Parking? A patch of grass nearby?

Buckley is more than just a sidekick; he’s the ultimate proof that dog-friendly travel isn’t just for the tiny pups,” Alexis says. “At a sturdy 63 pounds, he isn’t exactly a lap dog you can just tuck under your arm, but if we can navigate these spots together, any PAWrent can. We share every detail so others can say ‘yes’ to the adventure without the anxiety of the unknown.

Where to Next?

From train rides and wineries to “Yappy Hours” and hotel stays where pups can rest their paws, @DoggieRoadTrippin’ is proving that your dog doesn’t have to stay behind. Whether it’s a spontaneous brunch in the city or a planned weekend escape to the mountains, the message is simple: life is meant to be shared.

Sometimes, all it takes to find your way back to joy is a car key, a map, and a dog who’s ready for anything.
