The 15 Short-Legged Dog Breeds

1. French Bulldog

A very popular breed among dogs with short legs, French Bulldogs are an affectionate breed that loves attention. They are sociable and get along with almost anyone they meet! These bulldogs may be tiny, but they are built like a tank with incredible strength.

Their short legs are even more pronounced because of their muscular and stocky build, which totally adds to a Frenchie’s charm!

2. Basset Hound

The floppy-eared Basset Hound is another beautiful dog with tiny legs. Basset Hounds are known for their long bodies, short legs, as well as their droopy faces.

Matching their facial expressions, they also tend to be stubborn. Basset Hounds are popular as hunting dogs, but their calm and laid-back nature makes them perfect family pets.

3. Cairn Terrier

Cairn Terriers are fluffy balls of energy that make great family pets! Originally bred for hunting foxes and other prey in the countryside of Scotland, Cairn Terriers are a curious and energetic breed of dog that particularly loves to dig.

They are friendly, affectionate, and good-tempered, making them perfect for children, as they can easily keep up with their energy!

4. Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The first type of Corgi on the list, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a strong and athletic lap dog with a strong history of herding. Compared to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke has a tail close to its body and is smaller in size. With their short legs and stuffed chest, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is full of energy and strength. Its posture exudes confidence while showing off its perpetually standing ears!

They are amazing house dogs and work well with children, especially with their happy and cheerful expressions. They can easily match children’s energy and they require a lot of stimulation, but will also be more than happy to lounge on the couch as a lap dog with you!

5. Cardigan Welsh Corgi

The second Corgi on the list is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which is slightly larger than the Pembroke with a distinct fox-like tail. Cardigan Welsh Corgis were also bred for herding cattle, with physically strong features that include their stuffed chest, sturdy bones, and—you guessed it—their short legs!

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an easily trainable, cheerful, and loyal guardian that exudes a level of confidence as if it were three times bigger than its size. It makes an excellent family dog and requires activity and stimulation in their daily routine.

6. Pekingese

The Pekingese is a tiny dog with a thick coat that is so long that you can barely see its legs anymore! Their signature “lion’s mane” coat of fur is fit for royalty, as the Pekingese is one of the different breeds that were created for ancient Chinese royalty.

Loyal and protective, the Pekingese are heavy barkers, which makes them good watchdogs. They have a naturally protective behavior and are very particular about the people they want around them and their owners. While small in size, these protective dogs are very expressive and will immediately let you know if they approve or disapprove of something or someone.

7. Dandie Dinmont Terrier

Built for the farmlands of Scotland, Dandie Dinmont Terriers are tough and sturdy furballs that were initially used to hunt small game. They eventually adapted to city living and now make excellent family dogs! They are courageous and extremely intelligent, as well as great companions for children. They are also composed with their energy, suiting them for both lounging with their humans or keeping up with physical play.

Their large head covered with glimmering white hair gives them their signature look. Paired with their long bodies, tipped ears, and stubby legs, Dandie Dinmont Terriers are adorable and lovable dogs!

8. Dachshund

Famously known as ”the hotdog dog”, the Dachshund is a confident and strong-willed dog breed that hails from German descent. Their iconic long bodies with short legs have made their appearance extremely popular!

Do not be fooled by their hotdog-like appearance, the Dachshund is an excellent hunting dog and has a reputation to be a great watchdog as well. Quick to bark, the Dachshund is a protective breed that stays cautious when looking after their territory and their family. They are quick, alert, and love the company of their owners!

9. Pomeranian

The easiest way to describe the Pomeranian’s appearance is simple: a fluffy ball of fur. This tiny dog is a cheerful and happy breed that has captured the hearts of both royalty and commoners alike.

Oozing with personality, Pomeranians are little balls of fur that are oozing with big-dog energy. With the amount of energy packed in their tiny bodies, they are sure to keep you entertained as long as you are together!

10. Scottish Terrier

Dignified, distinguished, and high-spirited, the Scottish Terrier is known for their lively personalities and human-like character. Their distinctive beard paired with their wiry coat of fur gives them their iconic look. They are energetic and are known for their hunting instincts, making them great watchdogs.

They make excellent family dogs that require tons of stimulation to keep them occupied—so be sure to spend some time playing with these bearded furballs!

11. Miniature Schnauzer

The smallest of the three Schnauzer breeds, the Miniature Schnauzer closely resembles the Scottish Terrier in appearance. They are healthy, loving, and a low-maintenance breed with minimal shedding. Mini Schnauzers are sociable and people-oriented and enjoy the company of their humans. In fact, they enjoy being around people so much that they will likely follow you around the house like a shadow!

Intelligent and obedient, Mini Schnauzers are easily trained and make excellent watchdogs.

12. Tibetan Spaniel

Tiny, stubby, and notable for the lion’s mane around their neck, the Tibetan Spaniel is a charming little furball that enjoys bonding with their humans. They were bred as watchdogs in Tibetan monasteries, but have since become excellent family dogs.

Their big eyes, short snouts, and plumed tails make them an elegant little breed of dog. They are energetic, lively, and highly affectionate, making them a compact companion full of love!

13. Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

A headstrong and tenacious dog breed built for the rough terrain of Vendée, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was bred for hunting in coastal France. The name, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, loosely translates to “small”, “low”, “shaggy”, and Vendéen—which explains that the breed is a tiny hound from the region of Vendée, France.

Although no longer used for hunting, their hunting instincts, durability, and cheerful attitude make them excellent family dogs that work well with children! They also work in packs, making them sociable and easy to get along with other animals.

14. Miniature Bull Terrier

Miniature Bull Terriers, as the name suggests, are small versions of their standard-sized counterparts. Full of mischief, the Mini Bull Terrier is always upbeat and will always keep you entertained. They are stubborn, headstrong, and will require a firm hand for training.

Mini Bull Terriers are loyal, protective, and territorial dogs that you can rely on. While they are independent, they make for a great companion and family pet, and their playful and protective nature also makes them great with children.

15. Lancashire Heeler

The Lancashire Heeler shares similar physical traits with their Corgi cousins. The Lancashire Heeler is an intelligent, alert, and friendly dog that, just like the Corgi, makes an excellent family dog. They are small and sturdy with a history of cattle herding, with a hint of Terrier-like instincts for hunting smaller prey.

They are full of energy and have a signature Heeler smile, making them a happy addition to any household!
