How this quiz works
Always the first to greet everyone, or happiest with a quiet walk and your favorite person? This quiz turns your everyday preferences into a dog personality. Answer 10 questions about how you play, think, decide, and live to meet your match from 16 breeds, then explore what makes that breed tick.
- 1
Answer
Pick the answer that sounds most like you, from your ideal weekend to how you handle a change of plans.
- 2
Score four axes
Each answer moves one of four personality scales. Together, they form the four-letter type shown in your result.
- 3
Meet your breed
See your breed, its personality description, your mix of traits, and two playful companion picks.
What your four personality letters mean
Every question belongs to one of these four scales. Some answers lean a little toward one side; others lean more strongly. The quiz adds those choices together and takes one letter from each pair:
- E / I
How you play
Do you seek out company and new faces, or prefer quieter time and a smaller circle?
- S / N
How you think
Do you focus on what you can see and try, or on ideas, patterns, and possibilities?
- T / F
How you decide
Do you reach first for a practical solution, or consider feelings and relationships?
- J / P
How you live
Do you enjoy a plan and a dependable routine, or leave room for spontaneity?
Four pairs give 16 possible combinations. This structure borrows from Myers-Briggs-style personality types, but the quiz is a lighthearted activity rather than a validated personality assessment.
What the percentages in “Your mix” mean
Each percentage shows how strongly your answers leaned toward one side of a scale. A reading of 50% is an even split; a higher number means a stronger lean. For example, 75% reserved describes your answers about company and downtime. It does not mean you are a 75% match for a particular breed.
At an exact tie, the quiz consistently chooses I, N, F, or P for that scale. When your answers are close to the middle, changing one choice can switch a letter and give you a different breed.
Why these 16 breeds?
Each type has a set breed pairing in this quiz, inspired by familiar breed traits. Our ENFP Golden Retriever result emphasizes enthusiasm and warmth, while the INTJ Border Collie celebrates focus and a love of a challenge. Those are playful interpretations of the sociable nature described in our Golden Retriever guide and the energy and working drive explored in our Border Collie guide.
The pairing gives you a fun starting point for learning about a breed. A real Golden Retriever still needs exercise and coat care, and a Border Collie needs plenty of physical and mental activity. A short personality description only tells part of their story.
Do dogs really have personality types?
Anyone who has lived with more than one dog knows how different they can be. Our look at types of dog personalities describes familiar characters, from eager workers to playful clowns, and points out that a dog can fit more than one category. These are useful ways to describe dogs, without expecting every member of a breed to behave alike.
Your bond with a dog matters, too. Dogster’s article on whether dogs take on their owners’ personalities explores research into shared traits and emotional responses, along with its limits. Genetics, experiences, and socialization also help shape a dog’s behavior. Recognizing yourself in a breed description is part of the fun; getting to know an individual dog takes time.
What about the breeds you’d get along with?
Each result includes two companion personalities chosen for that type. They are conversation starters for comparing results with friends. For real dogs, compatibility depends on the individuals: their comfort around other dogs, energy, and play styles all matter. Our guide to finding a dog a playmate explains what to consider, including why some dogs prefer being the only dog at home.
Choosing a dog to bring home?
Enjoy your result, then look at what living with that dog would involve. Time for exercise and training, grooming, your household, and the cost of ongoing care deserve a place on your shortlist. Our guide to choosing the right dog breed walks through those practical questions.
You can also use our Dog Breed Selector to compare breeds against your routine, then read their profiles in the Dogster breed directory. Meet any dog you are considering and ask the rescue, foster carer, or breeder about that dog’s needs and behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
More about your personality type, breed result, and sharing the fun.
What dog breed am I? How does this quiz decide?
Your ten answers build a four-letter personality type based on how you play, think, decide, and live. Each of the 16 possible types has a set breed pairing inspired by familiar breed traits. The same answers always give the same result.
Is this based on the Myers-Briggs personality types?
It borrows the four pairs of preferences and 16 combinations used in Myers-Briggs-style personality types. This is an informal quiz for fun, not an official MBTI assessment or a scientific test of human or dog personality.
Why did I get a breed I don't like?
The result follows your answers about everyday preferences, so it may surprise you. It does not take your favorite breeds or their appearance into account. Read the personality description, check 'Your answers,' or use 'Retake quiz' to start again. A close split on one scale means a small change can produce a different breed.
Does this tell me which dog I should get?
Use the result as a reason to learn about a breed. Choosing a dog also means considering exercise, grooming, time, budget, and the individual dog's behavior. Our Dog Breed Selector compares breeds against practical preferences such as your home and activity level.
Can I share my result?
Yes. Use 'Copy link to results' to share a link containing your quiz answers. Friends who open it will see the same breed and personality breakdown, and can select 'Retake quiz' to discover their own result.
