History Of “Dog”

Ever wonder where the word “dog” came from? Okay, so maybe you didn’t but isn’t that an interesting question. Somebody at the Daily Times of Pakistan thought so because they ran this article. Here’s the first few paragraphs.

The dog is the most common household animal with cat and crow. It should have had more common roots within the Indo-European languages than cow and crow, but it remains elusive

Animals were often given names on the basis of some distinct quality. A horse is named for hair or mane, just as keshar (lion) in Sanskrit is named after its mane (kesh). How was the dog named? The dictionaries are silent on its etymology.
