Our Final Verdict

We give Maev Dog food a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.

4.8

Have you heard of the newest pet food craze of raw dog food? Does it sound like something you want to serve your dog?

Maev is a relatively new dog food brand, launched in 2020 and made in the United States. It is championed as the first human-grade raw dog food brand.

How good is Maev for your dog, and what varieties do they provide? This article will answer those questions and more with a thorough review of Maev Dog Food. Although Maev can be a bit on the pricey side, the health benefits make it a worthwhile investment.

At a Glance: The Best Maev Dog Food Recipes:

At the moment, Maev does not have the greatest selection of dog food formulas. However, its two recipes can be customized with a single ingredient swap to suit your dog’s specific needs (more on that later).

Maev is dedicated to creating raw food recipes to promote the health and well-being of your favorite canine.

Who Makes Maev Dog and Where Is It Produced?

Maev has quite an interesting backstory. Katie Spies, the founder and CEO of Maev, put her experience as an MIT engineer to the test by developing a dog food formula with a careful design. She was inspired by her dog, George, after he suffered a health crisis. From then on, she was dedicated to ensuring that George received only the finest dog food she could offer.

All Maev products are made in kitchens in the United States, where food scientists, designers, engineers, and veterinary nutritionists collaborate to create the best products for dogs.

Which Type of Dog Is Maev Best Suited For?

Maev can be fed to dogs of all sizes, from small to large. Also, it can be customized for specific needs because the company allows a single ingredient swap. Essentially, you can customize each recipe by switching out one ingredient, Maev determines which component you can swap and what you can replace it with.

For instance, depending on the ingredient you choose as a replacement, you can create a formula that is geared towards weight and digestion, anxiety and mental health, hair and skin, and hip and joint health.

Which Type of Dog Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

If you have a senior dog that requires a diet catered to their age, Maev may not be the best option for your dog. They currently do not provide age-specific dog food formulas other than for a puppy 8 weeks to 2 years old.

Potato is included in Maev’s recipes. If potatoes do not sit well on your dog’s tummy, consider another brand.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Maev’s primary ingredients are as impressive as they are nutritious.

In Maev’s Chicken Recipe, the three main ingredients are chicken, chicken liver, and chicken gizzard—all great sources of protein.

Maev’s Beef Recipe is much the same. The top ingredients in the formula are beef, beef liver and sweetbreads, and ground pork bone with peanut butter. Again, the ingredients are excellent sources of protein. The meat is all USDA-certified lean protein, making it full of premium nutrition.

Why Does Maev Make Its Dog Food Raw?

Maev insists that a raw food diet is packed with more nutrients than your average kibble, and it is less processed. Within 30 days of feeding Maev dog food formula to your pup, Maev claims you will be able to see clear signs of the health benefits that a raw diet provides.

These health benefits include, but are not limited to, stronger digestion, a boosted immune system, improved aging, and support to the skin, bones, and teeth.

    Maev Uses Simple Ingredients

When it comes to simple, wholesome ingredients, Maev is the brand to shop for. The ingredients that make up its meals include fruits and vegetables you might eat yourself, such as green beans and blueberries.

    Maev Offers Rewards Programs

The formulas that Maev produces are expensive. Thankfully, Maev has implemented a rewards system to provide dog owners with lower prices.

You can earn points by shopping at Maev, celebrating your dog’s birthday, or even just creating an account! With so many ways to obtain points, it may not take long to accumulate enough to redeem them for awesome rewards. At 300 points, you can save $25; at 600 points, you can save $50; at 900, you can save $75; and at 1,200 points, you save $100!

    There Is Not Much Selection

Unfortunately, Maev does not produce many dog food formulas. However, they make other products such as bone broth toppers and vitamin bars.

Reviews of the 2 Best Maev Dog Food Recipes

Although both of the recipes that Maev produces are of excellent quality, we have a favorite among them.

    1. Maev Raw Food: Chicken Recipe

    Maev Raw Food Chicken Recipe

The Maev Raw Food: Chicken Recipe is our favorite Maev recipe.  The primary ingredients are chicken, chicken liver, chicken gizzard, potatoes, green beans, zucchini, kale, peanut butter, and blueberries. It is AAFCO-approved for balance and completeness, and it contains USDA-certified chicken.

It also provides the option to swap an ingredient. The ingredients that can be switched are probiotics and chicory root; they can be replaced with bovine colostrum and L-Theanine for mental health, fish oils for coat and skin, and chondroitin and glucosamine for hip and joint support.

Overall, the recipe is beneficial and nutritious, providing your pup with quality ingredients to fuel a healthy lifestyle.

    Pros

    • Raw
    • Simple ingredients
    • High protein content

    Cons

    • Includes potatoes

    2. Maev Raw Food: Beef Recipe

    Maev Raw Food Beef Recipe

For Maev’s Raw Food: Beef Recipe, the main ingredients are beef, beef liver and sweetbreads, ground pork bone with peanut butter, kale, green peas, and blueberries. It is similar to Maev’s Chicken Recipe, and all but the protein sources are the same.

The beef meal provides wholesome ingredients for dogs. If you want to change the ingredients, you can switch the digestive enzymes and probiotics for chamomile and thiamine B1 to support mental health, fish oils to promote healthy coat and skin, and collagen-rich bone broth plus calcium-rich bone meal to bolster the hips and joints.

    Pros

    • Raw
    • Simple ingredients
    • High protein content

    Cons

    • Low fiber
    • Includes potatoes

    What Other Users Are Saying

    Conclusion

Although Maev can be pricey and lacking in variety, there is no denying its commitment to quality. With no recall history, simple ingredients, and a generous rewards program, Maev is an all-around excellent choice. We hope this article has helped to shed some light on the subject and provide you with a clearer understanding of Maev, allowing you to make a well-informed decision for your beloved dog.

As a company Maev lacks full service as they work 3+ days a week. Also tgeir food can arrive partially frozen. One option they provide is to “Ship Now,” on their autoship page. However if your need is urgent and you access the “ship now” option after Thursday morning, your order wont ship until then following Monday. This condition is not found anywhere on their site. As a Maev former customer I found this out too late. My order arrived a week later and partially frozed making bacteria a present reality.

Hello Raymond, thank you very much for sharing your experience with us, however, sorry to hear it wasn't a positive one. Although, we would love to help you with this situation, these things need to be dealt with directly with a manufacturer. Best of luck!

Hi. I have a wonderful Goldendoodle who turned 9 years the end of May. When he was about 4-5 years ago I was having issues with my vet because my Stanley was having diarrhea and due to Covid this vet kept having dog examined without me, giving me medication that never helped. So i changed vets. The new vet prescribed a meal they carried and same medication that did not help. So tried another vet — same thing: food and medication. Finally tried another vet, closer to me but pricey and he asked what I fed him and then he said lots of Goldendoodles seem allergic to chicken. He had me purchase another diet with salmon and finally my Stanley was cured in 2 days — he can eat beef or fish but no more chicken! Then 2 weeks ago I went to a party and the hostess was raving about Maev so I ordered it and it did not agree with my dog at all. I followed directions the company gave me and finally after 4 days breakfast and dinner and Stanley eating nothing at all, I finally stopped feeding the beef of Maev and Stanley finally ate his whole meal. I do not recommend this Maev food all !!!

Hello Elizabeth, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are sorry to hear about Stanley's issues, but happy that you were successful in finding the cause and solution! Not many dog owners realize, that dogs can be allergic too. As far as your experience with Maev go, as you also mentioned, not every food is suitable for every dog. Same as humans, dogs also have their preferences when it comes to food, and what works for one dog, doesn't have to work for another. Hopefully you and Stanley will have no more issues like this! Have a great day.
