Human-grade, frozen-fresh, hand-made dog food produced by a small-scale, family-run, ethically-minded company? Gently cooked, highly nutritious, and delicious recipes that satisfy my dog’s appetite and keep him healthy? Count us in! My dog Leo and I recently tried Evermore Dog Food for the first time, and we were impressed by the food and the company. As a typical dog owner, the first thing I do before Leo tries any new food is check out the company website. Evermore’s website provides information that is just what I’m looking for in any food company, whether it’s for Leo or me. The company is owned by a pair of University of Chicago alumni and genuine animal lovers who truly care about the products they make, from start to finish. Evermore aims to be in the 1% of companies who don’t source their food from factory farms, and they are succeeding. The company has personal relationships with their vendors and ranchers who must provide affidavits, certificates of analyses (COA), letters of guarantee, and in the rare cases when Evermore needs to source from outside the US, certificates of origin (COO). I take this as a sign that Evermore backs up what they say. And judging by the looks of the ingredients and Leo’s reaction to the food, I’m convinced. Evermore has four recipes: lamb, beef, chicken, and turkey. We started with the sampler quad pack, which is a great option that allows you to try all four flavors before committing to a larger size and/or subscription. The beef was a hit, which is not surprising because it's Leo's favorite protein. However, he also really enjoyed the turkey blend, which is a testament to Evermore's recipes because turkey is not usually a flavor he goes for.

    About Evermore

    evermore boxes lined up

Evermore Dog Food is produced on a smaller scale to ensure that the product aligns with Evermore's ethical principles. Along with exemplary sourcing requirements, Evermore uses a soft-cooking process for better digestibility, nutrition, and taste.

One of the founders, Alison, is a classically trained chef who applied some of these techniques to her brand, which is pretty amazing. The food is cooked sou vide, where food is sealed in a bag and cooked in water to ensure it reaches a certain temperature without overcooking. This is the first time I’ve heard about this in any dog food and I applaud the technique.

The other founder, Hanna, is an artist with extensive dog-walking, pet-sitting, and dog-training experience. Together they have created a product and a business model that is infectious and fun. Their recipes represent a powerful brand identity and an innovative approach to pet food.

Who makes Evermore and Where is it Produced?

As noted on their About Us page, it’s a long story, but Evermore was started by Alison and Hanna in Brooklyn, New York, in 2009. Due to their success, Alison has moved to the Bay Area in California, where she is spearheading new regional growth. Their “people food” kitchen is located in the Bay Area.

What Type of Dog is Best Suited For Evermore?

All Evermore recipes are wet food, so it is best suited for dogs who don’t eat dry kibble. The packaging doesn’t state what life stage the food is for, other than “pup approved”, but the recipes are designed for all life stages. Their beef and lamb are 100% grass-fed and the chicken and turkey are range and antibiotic-free.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

leo with evermore dog food boxes

    Chicken Recipe

The chicken recipe’s primary ingredient is chicken, which includes skin and chicken parts and is high in protein and amino acids. The second ingredient is chicken hearts, which are pure muscle and high in minerals and B vitamins. Third is eggs, high in protein and vitamins. The rest of the ingredients are liver, and organic vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, and grains.

    Beef Recipe

Similar to the chicken recipe, the first two ingredients are beef and beef hearts, which provide the bulk of the protein. The next ingredients include eggs, organic sweet potatoes, organic carrots, liver, and various organic fruits like apples and blueberries.

    Turkey Recipe

Turkey and turkey hearts are the primary ingredients. The following ingredients are eggs, organic vegetables, and fruit like butternut squash, carrots, apples, and cranberries, which is a nice touch with the turkey.

    Lamb Recipe

The lamb recipe is virtually the same as the turkey recipe, minus the cranberries. The primary ingredients are lamb and lamb heart, eggs, and organic vegetables and fruit. All Evermore recipes are high on quality ingredients, and have little to no fillers or preservatives. All recipes contain 11–12% protein, 7% crude fat, 1% crude fiber, and 73% moisture.

    Sourcing

Evermore takes sourcing seriously, and all ingredients are sourced from the United States except for their lamb (New Zealand). As noted above, they have strict certification requirements for vendors.

    Gently Cooked

Evermore prides itself on making their food in a “people kitchen”, where the ingredients and cooking methods are the same as in human food preparation. They have a long list of veterinarians who vouch for their ingredients.

    Same Recipes

While some may be put off that the recipes are virtually identical, this is not a bad thing. Small batches of food, like in quality restaurants, are a sign of a good menu. The kitchen has only four recipes to focus on, which ensures a quality product each time.

    In Summary

    Pros

    • High quality
    • Organic ingredients
    • Domestically sourced
    • The food backs up the company website’s claims
    • Considered “Human Grade” by the AAFCO
    • No recall history

    Cons

    • A little pricey, but worth the cost

Let’s look at two of the most popular recipes from the four available.

    1. Evermore's Beef Recipe

    Evermore-Beef-Product-image

The beef recipe is made from 100% grass-fed beef, raised by ranchers with strict humanitarian practices. The recipe is free from fillers and preservatives and meets the nutritional standards of the AAFCO. It is made in a real kitchen and is overseen by a chef and is veterinarian-approved. The eggs are pasture-raised, and the low amount of fish oil is MSC-certified Alaskan Pollock. There are 645 kcal per 16 oz serving.

    Pros

    • Domestically sourced and produced
    • All-natural products
    • AAFCO certified

    Cons

    • Contains grain, a potential allergen for some dogs

    2. Evermore's Chicken Recipe

The chicken recipe is 100% free-range organic chicken raised in a humane environment. The environment is considered gap step 3, which means the chickens have outside access. The eggs are pasteurized and the vegetables are organic and domestically sourced. The nutritional standards meet AAFCO requirements and the food is cooked sous vide style in a “people kitchen” with ingredients that are considered “human quality”. There is 492 kcal per 16 oz serving.

Our Experience With Evermore Dog Food

    leo eating evermore beef recipe

    *Free shipping for subscriptions

Leo and I had an overall positive experience with Evermore dog food. The website was impressive, and like their food, contains no filler. They get straight to the point and happily share their sustainability beliefs on the company website and on their food packaging. The food arrived in a frozen box that was well packaged and had ice inside to keep the food frozen, and it was well insulated. The quad sample is a great idea because it allows potential customers to try one package of each recipe before committing. Since they send all four recipe varieties, you also know which one your dog loves more. This works well with Leo, as he is a picky eater. He enjoyed all four recipes and I have seen no signs of illness that sometimes occurs when you change a dog’s diet. I love their small menu. To me, that’s a sign of confidence in one’s product, and the recipes are sure to be consistently good. I liked the detail of the packaging, including thawing directions and feeding guidelines. Each container of food is sealed and includes a stamped expiration date. Once I opened the package, the quality of the ingredients were evident. The food from all the recipes looks like ground beef and you can see chunks of vegetables. Since the food is soft-cooked, it is soft enough for dogs with dental issues (like Leo) to eat. Plus, if you have a smaller dog, you can feed them portions and refrigerate the rest. The shelf life is three to five days. Along with perusing their website, I also looked at online reviews, and I have yet to find a negative one. There have been no recalls either, and the company has been around since 2009. All in all, I would recommend this food for any dog who enjoys wet food. Per their website, all recipes are pup-approved, but the food is dense and may be a little rich for puppies. If this is the case, you can add a little water to dilute it before serving.

    Final Thoughts

Evermore is a nutritious dog food rich in vitamins and minerals. It is acceptable for all life stages and all of the ingredients are guaranteed to be humanely raised and organic. There are not too many negatives except for the grain content in some of the recipes, and the higher price point. However, the price point is due to the organic ingredients and non-factory methods to produce high-end food, so the price is worth it. The food is made with the same love and care that goes into human food, which is always a good sign. If your dog enjoys this food, Evermore offers a subscription service, which is convenient. Just remember that the food is shipped frozen so if you’re not home, you need to make arrangements to have someone pick it up. This is a high-quality food that is worth trying at least once.
