700 dogs from across globe come together in Chennai
From cuddly Labrador pups to ferocious Rottweilers, as many as 700 canines came together for a mega international dog show in Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.
Jointly organized by the Kennel Club of India (KCI) and the Madras Canine Club, the show was organized to coincide with the country’s first-ever International Championship Dog Show 2006 on Sunday.
“The dog show attracted 700 dogs, comprising of about 62 breeds. We have some very rare dogs. This is an international show, and we have around seven dogs from Thailand, Brazil and the US. Besides foreign participants, we also have several professional handlers from overseas,” said C.V. Sudarshan, a judge at the show.
The presence of foreign breeds, however, did not stop some dog lovers from saying that they missed India’s native street dogs, which are known for their loyalty.
“I think it is very important to bring Indian breeds into the notice of people because they are rare breeds. Different countries don’t know about these dogs and we must bring it to the knowledge of the people,” said Keith Hudson, a dog lover from the UK.
A special round for police dogs was also organised.
Judging the dogs on obedience levels and “beauty” standards, the show helped pet owners to exchange tips on dog-care.
Judges said the show’s objective was not only to judge the dogs, but also to spread awareness about different breeds.
