Pokémon have captivated gamers and anime enjoyers worldwide for decades, with the first generation of Pocket Monsters being released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1996. Since the beginning, the eclectic mix of monsters has drawn inspiration from real-world animals; man’s best friend features heavily throughout the franchise’s history, with almost 40 dog Pokémon now residing in the Pokedex (Pokémon’s creature encyclopedia).
With new Pokémon being released all the time, the doggies of the Pokémon regions are classified into “Generations” (along with all the other Pokémon released at the time). In this article, we’ll cover each of the 39 confirmed dog Pokémon and place them into their respective Generations with their Pokedex numbers.
The 39 Dog Pokémon
Generation 1
1. Vulpix (#0037)
Type: | Fire |
Variants: | Alolan (Ice) |
Vulpix is a fox Pokémon first introduced in Generation I, with one evolution in its evolution line. Vulpix is sweet and sassy, with a plume of six beautiful tails set high on its rump. These fiery foxes evolve into the stunning Ninetails with a Fire Stone, a special evolution stone found throughout the regions of the Pokémon world.
There is more than one version of Vulpix for Pokémon trainers to choose from, as something akin to regional differentiation has transformed the Vulpix of the Alola region into blue-furred Ice types.
Vulpix is born with a white tail that darkens and splits painlessly into multiples as it grows. These luxurious tails are then multiplied again when Vulpix evolves into Ninetails, earning it almost mythical status.
2. Ninetails (#0038)
Type: | Fire |
Variants: | Alolan (Ice Fairy) |
Ninetails is a Pokémon like no other, both in looks and in charm. This beautiful Pokémon is one of the more well-known canines, with its stunning nine tails. Ninetails evolved from Vulpix, either with a Fire Stone in its normal form or an Ice Stone for the Alolan form.
Both Fire and Fairy Ice Ninetails are formidable opponents, and they have powerful attacks such as Fire Blast, Incinerate, and Freeze Dry. It’s said that Ninetails are very intelligent and loyal, but they can be incredibly vengeful.
If you mistreat Ninetails, you may end up with a curse laid on you! The curses can’t be removed, and they last a very long time, considering each of the pup’s nine tails contains a power that allows them to live over 1,000 years.
3. Growlithe (#0058)
Type: | Fire |
Variants: | Hisui (Fire Rock) |
Growlithe is another popular dog Pokémon, which is unsurprising given its adorable appearance and puppyish behavior. Growlithe is a small, orange-and-black striped dog with a rounded muzzle and low-set ears.
It evolves into the majestic Arcanine when exposed to a Fire Stone, including the Hisui form. Growlithe are incredibly loyal, with evidence suggesting they’ve co-habited with humans for thousands of years.
They’ll often defend their trainers against threats no matter what, including from Pokémon much more powerful than them. They’ve also been known to be very territorial, often fighting with Rockruff (another dog Pokémon) over established ground.
4. Arcanine (#0059)
Type: | Fire |
Variants: | Hisui (Fire Rock) |
Arcanine is the graceful but powerful evolution of Growlithe, resembling a large, orange-striped dog with a billowing beige mane and tail. The dogs can run at breakneck speed, achieving 6,200 miles in only 24 hours with poise and steadfast grace.
Arcanine is much larger than Growlithe, and humans can ride on its back. Flamethrower and Raging Fury are two moves that pack a real punch, with the versatility of Hisuian Arcanine making it excellent for gym battles. Overall, Arcanine is known as a Legendary Pokémon for a reason; the might and grace of this dog Pokémon are as bright as the fire that burns inside it.
Generation 2
5. Snubbull (#0209)
Type: | Fairy |
Variants: | None |
If Bulldog puppies are your thing, the pink Snubbull is the perfect Pokémon for you! These little fairy Pokémon only stand 2 feet tall, but their mean expressions can make wary trainers pause.
Their frowny faces belie a sweet disposition, but Snubbull are known to be timid and affectionate. Snubbull evolve into the big, brutish Granbull once they reach level 23. They have powerful jaws and loose skin, making them as adorable as they are damaging in their attacks.
Both fairy and dark moves are available to Snubbull, and the moves Play Rough and Crunch are a nod to their rough-and-tumble bulldog exteriors.
6. Granbull (#0210)
Type: | Fairy |
Variants: | None |
Despite being a fairy type, there’s nothing delicate about this Pokémon. Granbull stands at around 4 feet tall, balancing on two legs. This big-headed Pokémon has trouble holding it up, thanks to the large jaws and hugely prominent teeth they sport.
Granbull has a wickedly powerful bite, utilizing Crunch in battle to win against its opponents. Granbull doesn’t like to bite, instead choosing to avoid conflict altogether. Despite looking wickedly mean, Granbull will roll over for belly scratches just like the Bulldogs that inspired them!
7. Houndour (#0228)
Type: | Dark Fire |
Variants: | None |
The short black and tan fur of the Houndour is reminiscent of a Doberman puppy’s, with rounded ears and a chunky body seemingly mismatching its stern expression. The skull-like white pattern on the Pokémon’s head makes it look menacing, and they are incredibly loyal to their trainers.
Houndour evolve into Houndoom at level 24. Houndour are agile and excellent at teamwork, often hunting in packs to take down prey. A Houndour will never leave a member of its pack behind, making them a great early-game addition to any Pokémon team.
Like real-life wolves, Houndour use complex howls and barks to communicate with pack members while hunting, making it sometimes difficult to understand them!
8. Houndoom (#0229)
Type: | Dark Fire |
Variants: | Mega Evolution (Mega Houndoom) |
If Houndour is a Doberman puppy, then Houndoom is a fully grown adult with a devilish twist. This dark dog shares its black-and-tan coloring with its pre-evolution, but a skull locket, large twisting horns, and a devil-tipped tail make this slender hound look menacing and altogether more sinister.
Houndoom are pack Pokémon, and the alpha is the individual with horns sweeping back toward the back of their heads. Because of this dark exterior, Houndoom have several legends surrounding them.
The ghostly howls of the Houndoom are said to come from the Grim Reaper himself, and the fire they can produce is borne from toxins in their stomachs; these terrible flames ensure burns inflicted by Houndoom never heal.
9. Smeargle (#0235)
Type: | Normal |
Variants: | None |
Smeargle is an unlikely addition to this list, but the origins of its floppy ears are confirmed in its name. It is a Pokémon whose name appears to be a combination of smear and beagle, and the sweet-faced painter certainly has the puppy-dog expression to match.
Smeargle stands on two legs and wears a brown collar with a long tail ending in paintbrush-like hairs. These hairs can sport different colors of paint depending on the individual, with each Smeargle using one of 5,000 different paint marks to mark their territory.
They’re unique in that they’re the only Pokémon capable of learning the move Sketch, which allows them to copy the moves of other Pokémon. Very useful in battle!
10. Raikou (#0243)
Type: | Legendary Electric |
Variants: | None |
Raiku is the first of the three Legendary dogs that appear in the Pokedex, representing the lightning strike that first struck the Brass Tower. Raikou was resurrected by Ho-Oh after the tower burned and looks like a cross between a large dog and a Saber-Toothed Tiger.
The lightning storms it represents are clearly seen in its appearance, with a mane cascading down its back like rolling thunderclouds and a bolt for a tail. Raikou is the only one of the three Legendary dog Pokémon able to fly, which it does so by riding on storm clouds.
Lightning strikes and thunder rolls when Raikou barks, and it appears to assist other electric Pokémon when they’re in danger. Raikou can use powerful electric attacks such as Zap Cannon and Thunder Fang, so it’s an amazing addition to any trainer’s team.
11. Entei (#0244)
Type: | Legendary Fire |
Variants: | None |
Entei is one of the best-known Legendary Pokémon dogs, strongly resembling a cross between a Lion and a Mastiff. Entei is one of three Legendary dogs who was resurrected by the Legendary bird Ho-Oh after the Brass Tower burned.
Because of this huge dog’s Legendary status, it is not known to evolve. There are legends surrounding this Pokémon, telling of volcanos erupting when it barks and visions of it striding endlessly across the land due to its uncontainable power.
This dog encompasses all that is fire and can use incredibly powerful moves such as Eruption and Lava Plume in battle. They usually only appear once in the games, so be prepared!
12. Suicune (#0245)
Type: | Legendary Water |
Variants: | None |
Suicune is the incarnation of a downpour and is a Legendary dog resurrected by Ho-Oh after quenching the fires that burned the Brass Tower. The heroic and stoic Suicune is calm in the face of adversity and has a thick mane flowing into twin tails that wave gently around it.
Legend says that this slender canine follows the North Wind around the world, searching for any filthy water to purify. One touch from Suicune’s paw is all it takes to purify a body of water, and the graceful Pokémon is often seen walking on its surface. Suicune also has some powerful moves, such as Hydro Pump and Blizzard.
Generation 3
13. Poochyena (#0261)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Poochyena is an adorable but fierce mix of a dog and a hyena, wearing a mean expression and trying to intimidate all that crosses its path. These Pokémon have an amazing sense of smell, which is used to track and hunt their prey.
Poochyena evolves into Mightyena at level 18, making it a good Pokémon for beginner trainers. While this puppy is tenacious and will track down prey until they’re exhausted, Poochyena is rather cowardly in combat with a bark worse than its bite!
They are dark Pokémon and use moves such as Crunch and Sucker Punch to whittle down their opponent’s health.
14. Mightyena (#0262)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Standing at just over three feet tall, the tough Mightyena is the grey-striped evolution of Poochyena. As a pack Pokémon dog through and thorough, the Mightyena is a ferocious hunter that uses cunningness and tenacity to chase down quarry following the pack leader.
Because of this strict sense of hierarchy, Mightyena only follows the commands of higher-level trainers. You’ll know if a Mightyena is about to bite since it growls low in its throat and will flatten its ears to its body (similarly to a real-life canine). Mightyena can use dark attacks like Assurance to help trainers win battles.
15. Electrike (#0309)
Type: | Electric |
Variants: | None |
This little Pokémon is full of energy, both in spirit and electricity! Electrike is a smaller canine that stands at 2 feet tall and weighs 33.5 pounds. They’re bright and fast and use the electrical charge they build up in their green and yellow fur to discharge sparks as they run.
Electrikes run faster than the human eye can see and become a blur as they race around the savannah they call home. Electrike evolves into Manectric once they reach level 26.
16. Manectric (#0310)
Type: | Electric |
Variants: | Mega Evolution (Mega Manectric) |
Manectric is much taller than its previous evolution, standing at 5’11 and weighing 88 pounds. Manectric is blue rather than green, with spiked fur that sparks with electricity. This electricity is gathered in the Pokémon’s mane and produces thunderclouds as it builds.
Manectric will then use the powerful electric charges in battles, attacking with Wild Charge or Thunder to stun and zap opponents. Manectric can Mega Evolve into Mega Manectric, making it even larger and giving it overcharged moves such as Thunder Fang.
Because of that, Mega Manectric cannot control the enormous amount of electricity it generates within its body. This leaves the canine Pokémon irritated.
Generation 4
17. Riolu (#0447)
Type: | Fighting |
Variants: | None |
Riolu is a bipedal dog Pokémon that’s all about fighting. They have two specialized organs that hang down on either side of their heads that act as sensors for “aura,” a special kind of energy.
Riolu are excellent fighters, and they can make long journeys on foot with ease, using their natural endurance and stamina to travel in record time. Trainers state that Riolu are playful and pure, and they often judge the trainers wanting to capture them to see if they’re pure of heart. Riolu evolve into Lucario once they bond with their trainers enough through high friendship.
18. Lucario (#0448)
Type: | Fighting Steel |
Variants: | Mega Evolution (Mega Lucario) |
Lucario is a force to be reckoned with. Standing at just under 4 feet tall, this canine Pokémon manipulates aura energy in an explosive way. Lucario senses aura much more efficiently than its previous evolution, Riolu, and it can sense the emotions of others from half a mile away!
It can communicate with humans telepathically, using its natural sense of right and wrong to choose only the most pure-of-heart trainers to be loyal to. Lucario lives in the mountains, away from people, and only fights when absolutely necessary.
When exposed to a Mega Stone, Lucario can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario, a much taller and bulkier Pokémon. Because of the explosive energy of Mega Evolution, Mega Lucario’s fighting style has been labeled as heartless and unmerciful by many who’ve witnessed it.
Generation 5
19. Lillipup (#0506)
Type: | Normal |
Variants: | None |
The fluffy Lillipup was a starter dog Pokémon in Generation V and is reminiscent of a Yorkshire Terrier. The “puppy Pokémon” Lillipup is both cute and tiny and only weighs around 9 pounds!
Lillipup uses its fluffy fur to collect information from its surroundings, judging its opponent’s strength and checking their condition. Beginner trainers like Lillipup as it’s easy to raise, and they’re known not to bark! Lillipup evolve into Herdier at level 16 and will never forget the love it’s shown even when it evolves.
20. Herdier (#0507)
Type: | Normal |
Variants: | None |
If Lillipup is a Yorkshire Terrier, Herdier is a Scottish Terrier (just with brighter colors!). Its boxy shape is due to how thick and luxurious this Pokémon’s fur is, making it more impervious to damage the longer it grows.
Known as the Loyal Dog Pokémon, Herdier evolve into Stoutland at level 32 and are expensive to keep due to their exorbitant grooming costs. Herdier have been with humans for a long time, and research indicates they were one of the first Pokémon ever to partner with people. A Herdier won’t team up with any trainer who disrespects them, however.
21. Stoutland (#0508)
Type: | Normal |
Variants: | None |
Standing at 3’11 tall and weighing 134 pounds, the Big-Hearted Pokémon Stoutland is the epitome of loyalty. The mustachioed Pokémon is intelligent, kind-hearted, and incredibly trustworthy, making it an excellent babysitter for trainers’ children.
They’re used as rescue dogs in cold climates thanks to the insulating properties of their long fur, and most households in cold regions keep a Stoutland for warmth. A Stoutland’s mustache is a point of pride for it; its length denotes social standing among other Pokémon.
22. Zorua (#0570)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | Hisui (Normal Ghost) |
Zorua is a devious canine Pokémon that evolves into Zoroark at level 30. Zorua is a natural illusionist who can shapeshift to keep its true identity hidden. Sometimes, this little dog will take on the form of a human child to search for food.
With a foxlike tail, Zorua is grey, red, and black in its normal form, but it takes on a ghostly grey and white body when reincarnated in Hisui. Zorua, in both its normal and Hisui forms, is the only Pokémon (other than Zoroark) that can use Illusion as an ability.
23. Zoroark (#0571)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | Hisui (Normal Ghost) |
Zoroark is the larger, bipedal evolution of Zorua, the fox Pokémon. Standing at just over five feet tall, Zoroark, in its normal variant, has a pointed snout and a long mane tied into a ponytail at the back of its neck.
As a master of illusion, Zoroark can induce illusionary visions indistinguishable from reality for crowds of people, even masking the land where it builds its den with hyper-realistic illusions. Like Zorua, Zoroark can cast an illusion and create a human image of itself; Zoroark can even speak in this form!
The Hisuian variant of Zoroark is ghastly and full of spite, thanks to being reincarnated as a vengeful spirit. Zoroark in Hisui cannot cope with the area’s harsh conditions, so they perish and return as ghosts. This Pokémon (along with its first evolution, Hisuian Zorua) is the only one capable of learning Bitter Malice.
Generation 6
24. Furfrou (#0676)
Type: | Normal |
Variants: | Trims (Natural, Heart, Star, Diamond, Debutante, Matron, Dandy, La Reine, Kabuki, Pharoh) |
As a Pokémon clearly influenced by the Poodle, Furfrou allows trainers to live out all their grooming dreams. These dogs have thick white fur that is commonly styled into one of nine “trims,” each having specific shapes and colors as part of the design.
If Furfrou is not re-groomed, it will revert back to its “natural” trim after 5 days. This Pokémon can be haughty and only allows trainers it trusts to cut its fur. Furfrou guarded the king of Kalos in ancient times and are very loyal to their trainers.
Generation 7
25. Rockruff (#0744)
Type: | Rock |
Variants: | None |
Rockruff is a sweet puppy Pokémon who has a very interesting evolution tree. These loyal and playful Pokémon are hardy and spirited, which can make them difficult to raise. Rockfuff has rocks studded into the fur around its neck, which it uses to pound the ground and intimidate its foes.
These dogs change from friendly puppies to unruly, aggressive adolescent dogs who begin to howl as the sun goes down as they get close to evolution. However, a Rockruff will never forget the patience and kindness a trainer shows them. Rockruff evolves into one of three forms of Lycanroc at level 25.
26. Lycanroc (#0745)
Type: | Rock |
Variants: | Midday form. Midnight form, Dusk form |
Lycanroc evolves from the puppy Pokémon Rockruff at level 25, and the form it takes depends on the time of day. Lycanroc’s ability also factors into its final form, and all three possible forms are visually distinct.
Rockruff, who have the abilities Keen Eye, Vital Spirit, or Steadfast, evolve into Lycanroc when leveled up in the daytime and Midnight when leveled up at night. Rockruff with Own Tempo evolve into Dusk when leveled up in the evening. Each form of Lycanroc is visually different, with the Midday form looking most wolf-like.
They also all have different personalities and traits; the Midday form of Lycanroc is calm and collected, while the Midnight form is reckless and has a vicious temper. The Dusk form is a mixture of the two, and the calm and steadfastness from the Midday form add to the tenaciousness and battle vigor of the Midnight form.
Generation 8
27. Nickit (#0828)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Nickit is a wily fox Pokémon, both cunning and canine in personality. It’s intelligent and uses trickery to steal food from people and other Pokémon instead of spending time and energy finding its own.
Nickit have pads on their paws that can compress when they take a step, and they move in total silence. Alongside this stealthy movement, Nickit’s long and bushy tail sweeps the ground behind it to clear any trace of its footprints. The foxlike Nickit evolves into Theivul when it reaches level 18.
28. Theivul (#0828)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Theivul is even more vulpine in appearance than its previous evolution, and it has mask-like black markings around its eyes and a long, flared tail. Theivul takes food stealing to the next level and marks its victims with a personal scent to track them.
Theivul then tracks the Pokémon (and people!) for as long as it takes, finally using its lithe and lean body to steal their food when they least expect it.
29. Yamper (#0835)
Type: | Electric |
Variants: | None |
The punky puppy Pokémon Yamper looks a lot like an electrically charged Corgi, with a bolt-shaped tail and heart pattern on its rump. Much like all puppies, Yamper is always zooming around everywhere. They are drawn to anything fast-moving, including a car, a person, or another Pokémon.
The movement of Yamper’s legs builds an electric charge in an organ on its rump, sparking when it scampers across the ground! While Yamper is often used to herd the sheep-like Pokémon Wooloo, they love treats and will only work for a reward!
Yamper evolves into Boltund at level 25 and can use moves such as Wild Charge in battle.
30. Boltund (#0836)
Type: | Electric |
Variants: | None |
The electric dog Boltund is a colorful and bright canine with a lightning-bolt tail and contrasting fur. This dog is all about speed. They run around the land without stopping for days thanks to the electric energy they can build.
All this energy is channeled to Boltund’s legs, boosting their strength and allowing the pup to run upwards of 50 miles per hour with ease. Boltund are known rivals of Thievul.
31. Zacian (#0888)
Type: | Fairy |
Variants: | Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Sword |
Zacian is a Legendary dog Pokémon that takes two forms depending on whether or not it welds the Rusted Sword in battle. In its normal form, Zacian is cyan in color with pink stripes along its sides.
It has visible battle scars, including a missing ear. Zacian is able to put itself into a kind of hibernation, transforming into a statue and sleeping for eons. The moves Zacian uses are comparable to a dance, being graceful and deadly all at once.
Any trainer who earns Zacian’s trust is lucky and will have a powerful ally to assist them in battles.
32. Zamazenta (#0889)
Type: | Fighting |
Variants: | Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Shield |
Much like its sister Zacian, Zamazenta has two forms: its normal form and a form activated by wielding the Rusted Shield. In its normal form, Zamazenta is a bulky dog with thick fur and a long ponytail running down its back.
It shares its statue ability with Zacian and can sleep for many years. When Zamazenta wields the Rusted Shield, it is covered in a golden shield-like armor that can be manipulated to allow it to use certain attacks (such as Behemoth Bash). Zamazenta’s mane also grows incredibly long and flows down its body.
Generation 9
33. Fidough (#0926)
Type: | Fairy |
Variants: | None |
The adorable Fidough is a cross between a puppy and a bread bun. Fidough has curly ears that resemble bread buns, and it can exhale yeast. This makes the puppy an excellent companion; it’s useful in everyday life as well as on the battlefield.
People want to naturally protect this Pokémon, and their skin is soft and smooth to the touch. Fidough evolves into Dachsbun at level 26.
34. Dachsbun (#0927)
Type: | Fairy |
Variants: | None |
Just as sweet as its prior evolution, Dachsbun is a clear reference to real-world Dachshunds (but with a baker’s twist!). It has an elongated body and short legs, just like the Dachshund, with its ears and dewlap closely resembling freshly baked bread.
Fur that is styled into a bread braid runs down its back, and a sweet expression matches its sunny disposition. Dachsbun is incredibly useful, and farmers treasure it for its wheat-growing abilities. If exposed to heat in battle, Dachsbun’s skin will harden (giving rise to its ability: Well-Baked Body).
35. Maschiff (#0942)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Maschiff is known as the rascal Pokémon, and the look of innocent chagrin on the puppy’s face speaks volumes. Puppy fat covers this Pokémon’s body, shielding it from most attacks. Maschiff have strong jaws that can crush boulders, and they try to use their sharp teeth to scowl menacingly at everyone.
However, this only results in a silly grimace that’s ineffective in scaring even children! Maschiff can use several dark moves, such as Payback and Jaw Lock, and it evolves into Mabosstiff at level 30.
36. Mabosstiff (#0943)
Type: | Dark |
Variants: | None |
Mabosstiff is known as a boss Pokémon, and its stern expression and weight make it much more intimidating than its previous evolution. A long coat of fur with stripes and a bushy tail add to this big dog’s bulk, making the 134lbs Pokémon look broad and powerful.
Mabosstiff have large dewlaps under their chins to store power and allow them to take the brunt of any attack. Despite all this brawn, Mabosstiff are incredibly gentle and adore playing with children. However, they are quick to protect their family and will show all their sharp teeth when needed.
37. Greavard (#0971)
Type: | Ghost |
Variants: | None |
This ghost dog Pokémon is completely covered in long, wispy, white fur that covers the dog’s eyes. A broad muzzle peeks out of this fur, and a lit candle protrudes from its head. These ghostly dogs rest underground with their candles emitting eerie light. As a cheeky trick, Greavared jump out and spook passersby with a jovial but scary cry.
They are very friendly and love people. Sadly, Greavard unwittingly drain the life from those around them. They’re rumored to be created from the spirits of dog Pokémon who never knew love from humans during their lives. Greavard evolve into Houndstone starting at level 30, when leveled up at night.
38. Houndstone (#0972)
Type: | Ghost |
Variants: | None |
Houndstone is a very large dog Pokémon that stands 6 feet tall at the shoulder. These incredibly friendly dogs have the same shaggy white fur as their previous evolutions, but skeletal paws and legs are visible beneath them.
Houndstone have a tombstone protruding from the tops of their heads, which they don’t like being touched. All of their limbs are not actually attached to their bodies; instead, they are floating just underneath their torso.
Like Greavard, Houndstone spend their time underground in graveyards with the tombstone sticking out. They are created when Greavard are lovingly mourned, and they are considered the most loyal of all canine Pokémon.
Generation 10
39. Okidogi (#1014)
Type: | Poison Fighting |
Variants: | None |
Okidogi is the last canine Pokémon on our list, and he is a Legendary dog well-known for his bonds with Pecharunt (a Mythical Pokémon). Okidogi is bipedal, broad, and barrel-chested, with green and black fur and a large purple leash around his neck.
There are no female Okidogi; only males of the species exist! Legend says that Okidogi was created from a smaller Pokémon who ran into Pecharunt and wished for power. Okidogi, together with the Pokémon Munkidori and Fezandipiti, protect the land from the “evil ogre” and grant kindness to those who worship it.
Final Thoughts
The Pokémon universe is no stranger to canine influence, and this giant list of dog Pokémon shows just how beloved our furry friends are. Whether you want a sweet puppy made of bread to accompany you on your journey across the world’s regions or a bipedal powerhouse to thwart all foes in battle, the Pokedex has the perfect dog Pokémon for you!
