dalmation dog wearing collar

Leather dog collars are stereotypically expensive and high quality. However, in today’s market, this is not always the case. They can also be found for low prices—and in varying degrees of durability and quality.

For this reason, we highly recommend caution when purchasing a leather dog collar. Just because it is made out of leather, that does not automatically mean it’s a good product. You will need to do plenty of research before deciding on a collar to buy.

Fortunately, these reviews will provide you with plenty of options!

  • The 10 Best Leather Dog Collars

    1. Soft Touch Collars Leather Dog Collar — Best Overall

Soft Touch Collars Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Padded

If you’re looking for a basic leather dog collar that works, we recommend the Soft Touch Collars Leather Dog Collar. It isn’t fancy or flashy, but it is handmade and hand-stitched with real leather. The edges are sealed to prevent fraying, and the inside of the collar is lined with sheepskin, which provides extra comfort.

We particularly like the solid brass hardware, which is designed to be tough and prevent rust. A mini brass ring enables you to hang your dog’s ID. The larger ring for leash use is on the opposite side of the collar from the buckle, which makes it sit in easy reach on the back of your dog’s neck.

There are many different colors and sizes available. This collar is only designed for medium to large dogs, so it may be a bit too big for small breeds. Based on this information, this is easily the best overall leather dog collar—if it’ll fit your pet.

    Pros
    • Lined with sheepskin
    • Made with full-grain leather
    • Handmade
    • Two D-rings
    • Many colors available
    Cons
    • Only fits medium to large dogs

    2. Logical Leather Padded Dog Collar — Best Value

    Logical Leather Padded Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Padded

If you’re looking for something less expensive that still works perfectly, we highly recommend the Logical Leather Padded Dog Collar as the best leather dog collar for the money.

It is made with 100% full-grain leather and is padded with split leather, which is quite soft. The quality of the leather makes it water-resistant and easy to clean. It also won’t fray or collect hair like some of the other collars on the market. A heavy-duty metal clasp enables the collar to stay firmly on the dog’s neck, and the leash ring is designed for pulling.

Several colors are available, though there aren’t many sizes. The collar seems mostly designed for large dogs.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • 100% full-grain leather
    • Water-resistant
    • Heavy-duty clasp
    • Many colors available
    Cons
    • Not available in small sizes

    3. CollarDirect Handmade Studded Leather Dog Collar — Premium Choice

CollarDirect Handmade Studded Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features None

The CollarDirect Handmade Studded Leather Dog Collar is a bit more expensive than many other options out there. It seems to be a normal dog collar, but it is studded, which is largely why it’s more expensive. This is one of the few collars that comes in small sizes, which we expect customers to take advantage of.

With two layers of leather, this collar provides plenty of comfort. It has a soft, inner layer to prevent chafing and similar problems. The hardware is heavy-duty and can withstand miles of walking.

If you are set on having a studded collar, this option is the best one. The leather is high-quality and the collar is well-built. You can’t ask for much more.

    Pros
    • Double-layered leather
    • Soft, inner layer
    • Strong hardware
    • Studded
    Cons
    • Expensive

    4. CollarDirect Rolled Leather Dog Collar

    CollarDirect Rolled Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Rolled

Unlike most other dog collars, the CollarDirect Rolled Leather Dog Collar is made from rolled leather. This means it has a bit of a round shape—not the flat design typically seen in dog collars.

It does come in a variety of different sizes, so it should be able to fit most breeds. However, it also seems that this collar was primarily designed for small dogs, which is something that you’ll need to keep in mind.

We did like that this dog collar is crafted from soft leather and has durable metal hardware. It is designed to withstand the test of time. The rolled shape is supposed to prevent matting and similar issues, but this means it is slightly less comfortable because it doesn’t lay flat against your dog’s neck.

    Pros
    • Many sizes available
    • Made from soft leather
    • Durable metal hardware
    • Prevents matting
    Cons
    • Less comfortable than some other options

    5. Euro-Dog Quick Release Leather Dog Collar

Euro-Dog Quick Release Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Quick release
    Collar Features None

For the most part, the Euro-Dog Quick Release Leather Dog Collar is a great collar to purchase for your canine. It is made with full-grain, American leather that is both durable and stylish and has a similar quality of leather as the other options on this list.

It has a quick-release buckle and stainless-steel springs, designed to be easy to open and take off. There is an extra leather tongue included for protection, and the closure and other accessories are constructed with European steel.

This collar also comes in many different colors and sizes, making it a perfect option for many different canines.

    Pros
    • Made with European steel
    • Quick-release buckle
    • Stainless steel
    • American leather
    Cons
    • Confusing size adjuster
    • Not as durable as some other options

    6. Euro-Dog Luxury Leather Dog Collar

    Euro-Dog Luxury Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Slip-on
    Collar Features Polyester stitching

As the name suggests, the Euro-Dog Luxury Leather Dog Collar is designed to be a luxury collar with plenty of features. It is made with 100% full-grain leather, polyester stitching, and steel hardware. Overall, it looks like the other options on this list. As you can easily tell from the design, it is meant to impress.

However, this is a Martingale collar, and it is designed to slip on around your dog’s neck and tighten when they pull on the attached leash. While this isn’t necessarily a huge problem, it does make it a bit more difficult to use if you’ve never had one of these collars before.

Furthermore, while this collar is labeled as “luxury,” it doesn’t seem that much more luxurious compared to some of the other collars on this list, besides the leather being softer. You’re paying a bit more, but you aren’t getting much out of it.

    Pros
    • 100% full-grain leather
    • All steel hardware
    • Polyester stitching
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Martingale collar

    7. Euro-Dog Celtic Style Leather Dog Collar

Euro-Dog Celtic Style Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Celtic styling

The main feature that sets the Euro-Dog Celtic Style Leather Dog Collar apart from others is that it has a Celtic endless knot design on the outside. If you’re looking for something a bit more stylish than other available options, this collar may be exactly what you are looking for. However, you are going to pay more for it.

Besides the pattern, this dog collar is similar to many other collars on the market. It’s made with full-grain, American leather. This quality material is durable and affordable. It also features steel hardware from Europe, which is strong and prevents the leash from breaking, even with large dogs.

You can get this collar in many different colors, but it seems mostly designed for large and giant breeds.

    Pros
    • Durable
    • Affordable
    • Aesthetic design
    Cons
    • Only for large breeds
    • A bit thin

    8. OmniPet Signature Leather Crystal Dog Collar

OmniPet Signature Leather Crystal Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Jewels

The OmniPet Signature Leather Crystal Dog Collar is specifically designed to fill a specific need on the market. It’s extremely cute, with bright colors and jewels around the outside. It is eye-catching and quite different from many other options on the market.

It comes with a polished buckle that is made from chrome (a low-quality material) and a D-ring specifically designed for small dogs. The two-ply leather design has color-matched thread for extra style and durability. We also like that this collar is made in the U.S.A. by skilled craftsmen.

However, this collar is only for small breeds, and it is a bit expensive for what you get.

    Pros
    • Made in the U.S.A.
    • Two layers of leather
    • Cute design
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Only for small breeds

    9. OmniPet Spiked & Studded Latigo Leather Dog Collar

OmniPet Spiked & Studded Latigo Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features Studded

For tough pets, you may want to consider the OmniPet Spiked & Studded Latigo Leather Dog Collar. Compared to other options on the market, this one is quite inexpensive. On the one hand, this makes it a great option for those on a budget. It is simply one of the cheaper leather collars that you can buy.

On the other hand, you’ll need to consider that it’s made with low-quality materials. For instance, the hardware is nickel-plate, not steel like many of the other options on this list. That said, the leather is real leather, so that’s a plus.

This collar has studs, so it is only suitable for certain dogs. Sizes are available from toy to large, meaning that giant breeds are not included. It is recommended that you measure your pet before you make any purchases to ensure that you get the right size.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • Studded design
    • Most sizes available
    Cons
    • Low-quality materials
    • No spikes in the front
    • Sizing difficulties

    10. OmniPet Paisley Leather Dog Collar

    OmniPet Paisley Leather Dog Collar

    Closure Type Buckle
    Collar Features None

With its attractive pattern, the OmniPet Paisley Leather Dog Collar is a beautiful option for practically any canine. It’s also made of real leather and handcrafted to be strong and durable.

However, this collar does have a few low-quality materials. For instance, the hardware is nickel-plated, which is a much lower-quality metal than the other options on this list. Therefore, you can expect this collar to fail sooner than most.

Also, while the colors are appealing, they tend to bleed when wet, so your dog’s fur might get stained after a walk in the rain.

    Pros
    • Pretty design
    • Inexpensive
    Cons
    • Low-quality materials
    • Bleeds when wet

Buyer’s Guide — Finding the Right Leather Dog Collar

While choosing a collar may seem like an easy choice, there are many decisions that you have to make. You shouldn’t just choose a collar that looks nice. Instead, aim for one that is durable, functional, and comfortable.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to keep in mind.

    Durability

It is true that leather is much more durable than most other options out there. However, that doesn’t mean that every leather collar is durable. It depends on the type of leather it’s made with and how it’s constructed. Quality leather can easily be made poorly if it isn’t sewn correctly, for instance.

Of course, you can only do so much guessing by reading product descriptions. A company might advertise that its collar is handcrafted, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s high-quality.

Since the company likely won’t give you a clear idea of its product’s quality, you’ll have to go elsewhere to find accurate information. One of the few ways that you can determine a product’s durability is to read reviews.

    D-Rings

A collar’s main purpose is to carry around your dog’s identification. However, you will also need to attach a leash to your dog’s collar when you take them out on walks or to the vet. Both purposes require D-rings. While you can use one D-ring for both, most quality collars have two.

Therefore, you should take a look at the D-rings on the collar that you wish to purchase. The body of the collar might be durable, but if the D-rings aren’t, you should skip it. Your canine might break the D-ring while on a leash or get lost, only to have their identification fall off.

The best hardware is crafted with steel. However, many customers may choose other options to save money. For this reason, you should always check that the D-ring is designed out of a quality material. Otherwise, your dog could find themselves in a dangerous situation.

    Aesthetics

Many people choose a dog collar based on its looks alone. While you should also consider other variables (like those suggested here), that doesn’t mean you should throw out aesthetics completely. You should choose a collar that you like that also fits your dog.

There are tons of different collars out there, including black studded collars and pink sparkly ones. The collar that you decide to purchase for your dog is largely up to you, as they likely don’t have a preference beyond comfort.

That said, we do not recommend purchasing a low-quality collar just because it looks nice. Put aesthetics second to other concerns. After all, it doesn’t matter how pretty your dog’s collar is if it breaks easily.

    Buckle

The buckle of the collar is easy to overlook. However, there are several factors to consider when looking at the buckle. For one, it should be easy to use and functional. Most dogs struggle at least a bit when you’re putting their collar on—you don’t need to have trouble with the buckle too.

The easiest buckles to deal with are quick-release ones. However, while these enable you to take the collar on and off quickly, they can also be torn open fairly effortlessly. Since they have more parts than other buckles, they can also more readily break.

A simple buckle is the most common type of closure system, and it tends to work the best. For this reason, we highly recommend that you choose a collar with this sort of buckle. It may be harder to put on your dog, but it stays on the best and won’t break.

There are other types of closure systems, but they may not be as high-quality and are often not recommended.

    Comfort

Since your pup may wear their collar most of the time, it’s important that you choose one that’s comfortable.

A strip of tough leather directly against your dog’s neck isn’t that comfortable, especially if it is thick. It can rub into your dog’s neck and cause sores. So, plain leather may not be the best option.

Instead, you want the collar to be padded with something else. Sheepskin is a common option, as is another layer of softer leather. The main point is that you want to choose something comfortable. Otherwise, you may end up with a collar that your dog can’t wear.

If you notice problems on your dog’s neck, such as fur loss or sores, you should remove the collar right away. In these situations, you usually have to leave the collar off of your dog for a while until they heal and then get a replacement collar that is a bit more comfortable. If the collar is not removed, the injury will not heal. Eventually, it will likely get infected, which is another problem entirely that may require medical attention.

    Cost

We would all like for cost to not be an important part of this decision-making process. However, for most people, it absolutely is. So, we highly recommend figuring out what you can reasonably spend on a leather collar. Luckily, many products are quite affordable.

Not all cheap collars are low-quality, but most are not high-quality either. If you aren’t looking for any fancy features, you will probably be fine with a cheaper collar.

Remember, though, that spending more up front for a decent collar often translates to spending less later. We recommend purchasing the highest quality collar that you can afford. Don’t go for the cheapest option unless you absolutely need to.

    Conclusion

Leather dog collars are often cheaper than most people imagine. While leather is stereotypically a high-quality material, it is quite cheap in today’s market. Therefore, most people can afford a leather collar for their dog; it is more a matter of which one.

For most people, we recommend the Soft Touch Collars Leather Dog Collar. It’s comfortable, soft, and durable. It has a layer of leather with sheepskin underneath, making it arguably one of the most comfortable collars around.

If you need to watch your budget, you may want to look into the Logical Leather Padded Dog Collar. It’s less expensive than most, but it is crafted with real leather and is still well-made.

We highly recommend that you choose a quality leather collar for your canine, though not just any kind. Hopefully, these reviews can help you make the right choice.
