Prisons go to the dogs
April 24, 2008 12:00amRETIRED greyhounds are getting a second chance at life – in prison. More than 20 racing dogs, who would otherwise have been put down, have been rehabilitated as domestic pets at Dhurringile prison, near Murchison.
The Prison Pet Partnership is working so well it is being set up at three other low-security country jails: Beechworth, Tarrengower and Langi Kal Kal.
Corrections Victoria and the Greyhound Adoption Program started the trial at Dhurringile last September.
Prisoner Paul, who is doing time for defrauding the Commonwealth, hopes to adopt one of the dogs himself when he is released in June.
“I’ve been with the program since it started and had Dougie until he went to new owners last week, so now I’ve got Troy,” he said.
