Dog dumping has risen dramatically in South Australia, with the Animal Welfare League saying an extra 1,800 dogs were dumped in the last year.

While some find new homes, around 40 per cent are put down.

League spokeswoman Samantha Catford says extra funding is needed to fix the problem, which is partly being blamed on an increase in living costs.

“This is a community issue – the Animal Welfare League deals with the problem as the animals come in, but it’s obviously becoming worse and worse,” she said.

“More animals are getting dumped every year. This really needs a collective group to get around the table to work out what we’re going to do to save more animals.”
