OUR MISSION
Animal Balance works collaboratively with the local authorities, local NGO’s and most importantly the community of the Galapagos Islands to organize intensive sterilization programs for cats and dogs. Collectively, we humanely stabilize, then reduce and control the numbers of cats and dogs. To support this and create sustainability we coordinate public education campaigns aimed at teaching people how to humanely care for and control their pets. By reducing and controlling the cat and dog populations the community is healthier and the native species are protected, helping to conserve bio-diversity in the Galapagos.
Here’s how they do it…
History
The Galapagos Islands are home to one of the most famous and unique ecosystems in the world. Declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, this Archipelago lies on the equator, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Humans arrived around 1535 bringing cats to control the mice and dogs to hunt. When they left these animals were abandoned on the islands.
The Problem
The Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) states that non-native species, such as cats and dogs, are increasing in numbers and are impacting the native species. The local government and community are concerned about alleged health risks and business owners are concerned that large numbers of free roaming cats and dogs may impact tourism. Both would like cat and dog populations reduced and then managed.
