Wag dog food is affordable and offers a variety of options for all dogs. The cost-effectiveness combined with the quality ingredients makes Wag a premium choice both for its accessibility and its excellence.

Who Makes Wag, and Where Is It Produced?

Wag originated from a former e-commerce company known as Quidsi. Quidsi was acquired by Amazon in 2010 for nearly $500 million. Along with that purchase came sites such as BeautyBar.com, Yoyo.com, Casa.com, and you guessed it: Wag.com.

However, Quidsi was shut down in 2017. But not long after, Wag.com was reborn into an Amazon dog food brand simply called Wag. Since this product is fairly new, there isn’t as much information about it readily available. But according to Amazon, Wag formulas are made somewhere in California, USA, while the ingredients are vaguely sourced from all around the world.

Which Type of Dog Is Wag Best Suited for?

Wag has options for nearly every dog. Whether your dog is a puppy, an adult, or a senior, Wag has you covered. There are also recipes for small breeds, large breeds, and healthy-weight dogs. They even provide training treats and supplements that can help to maintain hip and joint health.

Which Type of Dog Benefits From a Different Brand?

Although Wag has options for dogs with health complications, such as the chews for joint and hip maintenance, their options for other health-related concerns are slim. For instance, dogs with stomach issues or allergies might not find as much benefit in Wag’s recipes. If your dog has problems with its stomach, try Purina Pro Plan Adult Sensitive Skin and Stomach, and for allergies, try Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DRM Dermatologic Management Naturals.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Wag’s formulas each have their own primary source of protein, whether it’s chicken, beef, lamb, or salmon. These whole meats are the first ingredients in the formulas, meaning they are one of the primary elements of Wag dog food.

Meat meal is often the second ingredient listed, which means that your pup is getting some extra protein.

Grains vs Grain-free: Which to Choose?

Wag provides food with wholesome grains as well as recipes with no grains. While considering which recipe is best for your dog, be sure to reach out to your vet to verify if a grain-free diet is necessary for your dog. Unless your dog suffers from a grain-specific allergy, grain is an instrumental part of a healthy dog’s diet.

    Watch for Lentils and Peas

It is important to note that some of the recipes have lentils and/or peas in them, such as the Wag Dry Dog Food Adult Dogs (Beef & Lentil Recipe with Wild Boar). Lentils and peas are a source of concern, according to the FDA, as they may be directly linked to canine heart disease.

    Crumbly Kibble

One of the negative aspects of Wag food and one of the reasons we can’t give it a full five stars is the occasional issue with crumbly kibble. Some pet owners complained that their bags of food had an unusable, powdery mixture rather than the kibble pellets they were expecting. Of course, issues like this can be remedied by returning the product and securing a proper bag, but it can still be a hassle.

Now, let’s dive deeper into the top three Wag dog food recipes:

    1. Wag Wholesome Grains Dry Dog Food (Chicken & Brown Rice)

Wag Wholesome Grains Dry Dog Food (Chicken & Brown Rice)

The Wag chicken and brown rice recipe is an excellent choice both in nutrition and cost-effectiveness.

This recipe contains quality protein and antioxidants, and it is made primarily with cage-free American chicken. These ingredients provide support for your pup’s muscles, immune system, bones, and joints. All of this, plus the addition of wholesome grains, delivers the quality nutrition your dog needs.

As long as your pup isn’t allergic to chicken, this pick is a premium choice. If your dog does have issues with chicken, check out the recipe below.

    Pros
    • Wholesome grains
    • Cage-free chicken sourced from the United States
    • Immune system support with antioxidants
    • No added chicken by-product
    Cons
    • Chicken could be an allergen

    2. Wag Wholesome Grains Dry Dog Food (Lamb & Brown Rice)

Wag Wholesome Grains Dry Dog Food (Lamb & Brown Rice)

This option is slightly more expensive than the chicken and brown rice, but it has the same great nutrition.

Lamb is the main ingredient in this food, so you know your pup is getting the protein that they need. Once again, the high-quality protein content supports the muscles, and the other ingredients maintain your dog’s digestion, immune system, and dental health. It also has healthy grains that support your canine’s well-being.

    Pros
    • Lamb is the primary ingredient
    • Wholesome grains
    • Supports healthy joints and mobility
    • Calcium and phosphorus promote bone and tooth health
    Cons
    • No option for puppies

    3. Wag Dry Dog Food Small Breed with Grains (Chicken & Brown Rice)

Wag Dry Dog Food Small Breed with Grains (Chicken & Brown Rice)

The Small Breeds recipe is a fairly popular option that Wag offers. It has all the proteins and fats needed to support the energy of a smaller breed of dog.

    Pros
    • Made with real chicken
    • No added chicken by-product
    • Probiotics and fiber to bolster digestive and immune systems
    • Healthy coat and skin with omega 3 & 6 content
    • Adapted to smaller breed dogs
    Cons
    • Limited bag sizes
    • Chicken could be an allergen
    • Higher priced

    In Conclusion

Every dog owner wants to do their best to take care of their furry friends. Choosing the right dog food is a huge part of that, as a dog’s diet affects every other part of its life and health.

Wag dog food is an affordable and nutritious brand, but some of the grain-free options may require more digging into in order to verify how healthy they are for your pup. Overall, Wag has established a reputation for developing excellent quality dog food at a bargain price.
