Comparison

Our Experience With The Pets Table

To test out The Pets Table subscription plans and their recipes, I enlisted the help of my fifteen-year-old Dalmatian mix, Ragz. We opted to try two of their Air-Dried foods and one Fresh recipe.

The Air-Dried options came in small bags to match the length of our trial period. Unlike some subscription options that tailor the portion sizes specifically to your dog, the Fresh meals we received came in standard portions with instructions on how much to feed and easy-to-use measurement markings on each package.

In terms of flavor, all three recipes got two big paws up from Ragz. She was a huge fan of the Fresh recipe and loved the Air-Dried options as well, so much so that they easily doubled as treats.

As far as my review of the recipes, I was mostly happy with one notable complaint.

I love that all recipes feature meat as the first ingredient; some contain organ meat, and all include superfood fruits and vegetables. I also really like how simple and recognizable the ingredients are. 

My one complaint is the use of chickpeas in many of the recipes. In fact, in several of the Fresh options, chickpeas are listed second, right after the primary meat ingredient. This healthy, plant-based ingredient is high in protein, but it’s not as useful to dogs’ systems as animal-based proteins. Additionally, there has been some concern that chickpeas and other legumes may reduce the absorption of taurine in canine systems, which has been linked to the development of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).⁽¹⁾ However, this link has not been scientifically established.

As animal protein is the primary ingredient in all of The Pets Table’s recipes, this isn’t a huge red flag, but it is something that owners, particularly of dogs with a history of heart disease or breeds predisposed to DCM, should be aware of and speak to their vet to make sure it is the right food for their pet. 

As we’ve discussed previously, one of the biggest selling points of this brand is that they offer a range of diets with various subscription types, making premium fresh dog food accessible to everyone. I find this super helpful as travel, schedule changes, and budget constraints often dictate how much time and money I can put toward dog food and how important (or not) easy-feed diets are at any given time.

Overall, I highly recommend The Pets Table for any owner who wants to dabble in fresh food or dive right in – the choice is yours!
