The company was founded in 1946 by Paul Iams, an animal nutritionist who planned to bring quality dog food to animals who’d mostly been fed table scraps throughout their lifetimes. In comparison to other dry dog foods available at the time, Iams was considered a premium brand. The dedication to only using the best ingredients continued up until 1999 when the company was sold to Procter & Gamble and things began to change.
Now, Iams is made by the Mars company. While Mars distributes several of the giants in the pet food world, it doesn’t have the same history as Iams. Beyond being one of the first premium dog foods, Iams also has the distinction of being the first pet food company to make foods per an animal’s life stage.
