pitbull puppy eating from plate

pitbull puppy eating from plate

As the person responsible for your dog’s well-being and health, you likely take your pet’s nutrition very seriously. Canned and wet dog foods are great options for many pet owners as they are easy to use, and pit bulls generally love them.

For pit bull owners specifically, you’ll want to consider a few things when choosing the right canned or wet dog food for your beloved pup. Pitbull is an umbrella term that usually refers to four breeds: the American bully, American Staffordshire terrier, the American pit bull terrier, and the Staffordshire bull terrier. Most of these dogs are muscular, large, and active.

While each dog is different and their activity level will vary, they tend to need meals with higher calories and more protein. We’ve included information on the best options on a budget, the best overall, and even the best choice for a pitbull puppy.

There are a few added ingredients, such as chickpeas, so you’ll need to check with your vet to make sure they aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients. Generally, grain-free diets are unnecessary as grain ingredients are beneficial to most dogs. But, if you’re looking for a higher-protein content canned food for your beloved pit bull, they will likely enjoy the all-natural taste with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Canned and Wet Dog Food For Pitbulls

We hope that the recommendations on this list will help you pick the best canned and wet dog food for your pit bull. However, you may have additional questions about the best choice for your dog. This Buyer’s Guide contains information on how to compare options and what you need to know before picking a new food.

    Ingredients

Unsurprisingly, one of the most important things when picking food for your pit bull is looking at the ingredients. High-quality ingredients are necessary to help your pit bull grow and remain strong and healthy.

You may only consider meat protein when looking at the ingredients list, but dogs also benefit from proteins found in vegetables. Meat protein is key for pit bulls because they are muscular and active, so you want to make sure meat is listed in the first three ingredients. Ensure that these are real meat products also.

But, a balance of proteins found in fruits and vegetables is also necessary as there are many essential vitamins, minerals, and more in these food items that pit bulls also need.

Finally, you may have heard varying things about corn and grain in dog food. Neither of these ingredients are bad for dogs, but some dogs could have allergies to specific ingredients. Overall, grains tend to support a healthy diet, so you don’t need to avoid them.

    Age And Health Status

The age of your pit bull is another crucial factor in choosing dog food. Because puppies need extra energy and calories to grow, puppy foods often have slightly different ingredients. Many pet foods made for puppies are also easier to digest with smaller pieces.

If you have an older dog, it could have health problems that make digesting food difficult. Senior pups can benefit from wet food with smaller chunks that are easy to eat.

    Cost

While you want to provide your dog with the best food, you also have to consider what you can afford. The higher-quality dog foods, especially the canned options, are usually on the pricier side. But, some are more affordable than others.

If your dog has specific health or dietary needs for a time, consider using a more expensive option or mixing it with a less expensive brand. But, of course, make sure to contact a vet for specific advice.

If you need to speak with a vet but can't get to one, head over to PangoVet. It's our online service where you can talk to a vet online and get the personalized advice you need for your pet — all at an affordable price!

    1. Our pit bull ate kibbles most of his life. at least 14 years of straight kibbles. He was with his owner every day and he is a very obedient, loving, gentle dog. When his owner went away for 7-10 days the dog did eat and he was normal for 2-3 days. Then he stopped eating, instead of bowel movements a reddish liquid was all he would excrete. When his owner got home, you could see the change in the dog. He still wouldn't eat kibbles. We bought ultra canned food for senior dogs. We feed him canned food mixed with kibble twice a day. If we forget to feed him, he knows how to ask for food. Facebook says NO, do not feed him 2 cans a day. Diesel demands two cans a day. Would you say that is sufficient. Diesel is 16 or 17 years old.

      1. Hi Emerald,

It sounds like Diesel has been a wonderful companion for many years, 16 or 17 is an amazing age for any dog! At that stage of life, it’s not uncommon for dogs to become a bit more particular about food, especially after health or emotional stress. Since Diesel had that episode with reddish discharge and changes in appetite, it would be safest to check in with a veterinarian to make sure there isn’t an underlying medical issue affecting his digestion or nutrition needs.

As for the amount of canned food, the right portion really depends on Diesel’s weight, activity level, and overall health. At his age, it’s important to make sure he’s getting enough calories and nutrients without upsetting his stomach. A vet can help you tailor his feeding plan and ensure he stays comfortable and well-nourished. If you'd like to have a consultation online, you can book to speak with one of our experts at Pangovet.com 🙂

        Have a great day!
