Our Final Verdict

We give NHV Natural Pet a rating of 4.75 out of 5 stars.

NHV Natural Pet is a Vancouver-based pet wellness brand that creates high-quality natural supplements for dogs, cats, and other pets. Since being founded in 2012, the brand has developed over 25 different supplements that support over 150 different health ailments and issues.

When it comes to NHV supplements, there’s something for everyone. Healthy dogs can get additional support for daily bodily functioning and maintenance. Dogs with specific health issues may experience alleviation of some symptoms associated with their condition.

NHV is known for its high standards of quality assurance and for providing powerful and effective supplements that only contain essential ingredients. So, it’s one of the best options to consider if you’re looking for natural remedies for your dog. Just keep in mind that there’s a general lack of research on natural pet supplements. So, it’s important to do your own research and consult your veterinarian before adding any supplements to your dog’s diet.

I reviewed NHV’s Milk Thistle for Dogs and Turmeric for Dogs supplements with my own dog. Overall, I was impressed with how the supplements were thoughtfully crafted. So, despite being more expensive than many other pet brands, I’d recommend NHV products over most pet wellness brands.

Who Makes NHV Natural Pet Supplements and Where Is It Produced?

NHV Pet Products was founded by Patra de Silva in 2012. De Silva studied Ayurveda and natural medicines and was inspired to create pet supplements after rescuing a street dog. She partnered with a holistic veterinarian and master herbalist and eventually created numerous natural formulas for cats, dogs, and a variety of small pets.

NHV is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the company sources its ingredients from organic farms and suppliers with ethical growing practices. These suppliers are located across North America, Europe, and India.

Which Types of Dogs Is NHV Natural Pet Supplements Best Suited For?

Many types of dogs can benefit from taking natural supplements. If your dog has a chronic illness, it’s possible to add natural remedies as supplemental support to alleviate symptoms. This can be particularly helpful if your dog is experiencing negative side effects from prescription medication.

NHV may also be a good fit for some older dogs. As dogs get older, they can start to experience age-related health issues, like arthritis, vision and hearing loss, and diabetes. NHV has several natural medicines that have been specifically formulated for these types of health concerns. They also have clean ingredient lists, so they’re a viable choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs and food allergies.

Keep in mind that not all dogs need to take supplements, especially if they’re puppies and don’t have any specific health issues. It’s best to speak with a pet expert like your veterinarian before adding any sort of supplements to your dog’s diet.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

NHV has about 25 different formulas for pets and has products that can help treat over 150 kinds of health ailments. It only uses natural ingredients, and the formulas all have clean and simple ingredient lists. The Milk Thistle for Dogs supplement is made up of 100% natural milk thistle. Milk thistle has been traditionally used to help treat liver and gallbladder issues. Some research indicates that it may help individuals with cirrhosis and liver issues because it contains high levels of silymarin, which is an antioxidant compound.

The Turmeric for Dogs supplement is made with 100% natural turmeric. Turmeric is well-known and commonly used to treat ailments related to inflammation. It contains curcumin, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, turmeric is a popular natural remedy for several different health issues, including arthritis, inflammation, and metabolic syndrome.

While natural supplements can benefit a dog’s health, they should be given to dogs with caution. While it seems ideal to treat your dog’s health ailments with natural remedies, it’s important to consult your veterinarian first. Some herbs can interfere with medication, while others can have a negative impact on your dog’s natural bodily functioning.

Too much of a good thing can quickly turn bad, and many dogs can experience an upset stomach or digestive issues if they ingest high doses of herbs or spices. For example, while dogs can safely eat small quantities of cinnamon, prolonged overdosing can lead to indigestion and liver disease.

    Clean Ingredient Lists

All of NHV’s supplements are 100% natural, human-grade, and use non-GMO vegetable glycerin during production. In general, pet supplements have weaker regulations, so it’s more common to come across low-quality options that don’t actually meet adequate levels of all the components they’re supposed to contain.

In comparison, NHV’s supplements have extremely clean ingredient lists, and you won’t find any that contain unnecessary fillers or strange ingredients. All raw materials are either organic or ethically wild-crafted, and they must all receive a certificate of analysis before being used.

    Strict Quality Assurance Procedures

Each imported ingredient is tested with strict quality assurance procedures to ensure that every batch of supplements meets their high standards of excellence. On top of only using raw materials that have a certificate of analysis, NHV has an in-house quality control team that examines all the raw materials to make sure they’re fit for use.

The supplements are manufactured in a GMP-certified facility, and new batches of supplements are tested by a third-party lab. NHV puts a tremendous amount of effort into developing high-quality natural supplements and has several notable certifications, including the following:

    • BC Certified Organic
    • Canada Organic
    • Ecocert
    • FDA Certified
    • GMP Certified
    • HACCP
    • USDA Certified Organic

Ongoing Research in Herbal Remedies for Pets

NHV is involved with ongoing research on the effects of natural supplements on animals. The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine used Tripsy, one of NHV’s products, in one of its studies. The study examined the effects of the supplement on young and healthy cats and dogs and the risk of developing urinary stones. While more follow-up research is required for more conclusive results, the initial study had promising findings and saw that the supplement lowered the risk of the development of urinary stones.

    More Research Is Required

It’s important to note that thorough research on natural pet supplements is rare. More research on the effects of herbal medicine on pets is needed, and it’s unclear as to how certain compounds in medicinal herbs affect the body. So, it’s extremely important to be as well-informed as you can be about introducing your pet to new supplements. Natural supplements may help some pets with managing the effects of certain ailments or maintaining their general health, but they’re not the cure for certain diseases and illnesses. NHV also makes disclaimers on their products pages that their products are meant to be used as supporting supplements.

Reviews of the NHV Natural Pet Supplements We Tried

    1. Milk Thistle for Dogs

    nhv natural pet milk thistle

This milk thistle supplement contains 80%–90% of silymarin, which is an active ingredient in milk thistle that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The formula is designed to help support liver and kidney health, and it may help with cancer support. So, it’s a viable option to bring up to your veterinarian and see if it can be incorporated into your dog’s treatment and care.

The supplement is in liquid form and is much easier to administer than pills or capsules. You can either feed it directly to your pet or mix it in with food. Since it doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives or additives, it must be refrigerated once opened and has a shelf life of 6 months.

We can’t deny the fact that this milk thistle supplement is relatively expensive compared to other brands. However, NHV is extremely selective and thorough with their ingredient sourcing and manufacturing processes. So, you can rest assured in knowing that you’re giving your dog a high-quality supplement.

    Pros
    • Contains high amounts of silymarin
    • Designed to support liver and kidney health
    • Easy to administer
    Cons
    • Might not be budget friendly

    2. Turmeric for Dogs

    nhv natural pet turmeric

This supplement has been carefully crafted to provide all the health benefits associated with turmeric. It contains between 80%–90% curcumin, which is the powerful substance in turmeric that helps reduce inflammation. The supplement also contains small amounts of black pepper, which has its own antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.  It also helps with better nutrient absorption.

This supplement is also in liquid form and comes with a dropper, so it’s easy to administer. All NHV supplements can also be used together, so you don’t have to worry about two different supplements negatively interfering with each other. Just be careful with the dosages and make sure you’re following NHV’s dosage guide. Too much turmeric can cause several health issues, including an upset stomach, nausea, gallbladder issues, or an iron deficiency.

    Pros
    • Contains high amounts of curcumin
    • Formulated for optimal nutrient absorption
    • Easy to administer
    Cons
    • Need to use the calculator on NHV’s website to calculate the correct dosage

Our Experience With NHV Natural Pet Supplements

cavapoo dog with nhv natural pet supplements

I tested out the Milk Thistle for Dogs and Turmeric for Dogs supplements with my 8-year-old Cavapoo. She’s a relatively healthy dog, but she does have some food sensitivities. So, I consulted with a veterinarian to ensure she was able to take these supplements safely before testing them out.

Once I received clearance from the veterinarian, I started giving my dog her daily dosages. NHV has a convenient calculator located on all its product pages so that you can make sure you’re giving your dog the correct doses.

My dog is a notoriously picky eater, so I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t like either the turmeric or milk thistle supplements on their own. The supplements have a distinct smell, and she wasn’t fooled when I tried mixing them with her food. However, it was easy to use the dropper, so I didn’t really have any issues with getting her to take the supplements. I will say that turmeric does stain temporarily, and my dog had yellow around her mouth for a few weeks. So, make sure to be careful when using the dropper.

My dog took the supplements for a few weeks. It might be too soon to say, but I didn’t notice any huge changes with my dog. However, I was relieved that she didn’t get an upset stomach or have a hard time digesting the supplements. She does have runny poop every once in a while, and I did notice a reduction in their occurrences and her stool appeared healthier.

Overall, I was satisfied with my experience with NHV’s supplements. I was most impressed by how simple the ingredient lists were, but they were highly concentrated with active ingredients. So, even if they’re priced higher than other natural supplement brands, they’re worth the cost, and you’re definitely getting what you pay for.

    Conclusion

It’s rare to find a company that places such high standards on itself as NHV. As a dog owner, it’s reassuring to know that I’m giving my dog supplements that only contain necessary ingredients and are truly 100% natural. So, if you’re interested in giving your dog supporting supplements for certain health issues, NHV is one of the best and safest choices for your dog. Just make sure to talk to your veterinarian beforehand to determine what types of supplements will benefit your dog.
