Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Hungry Bark Dog Food a rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Pet owners are demanding better quality ingredients in their pets’ food. We want high-quality foods that will give our dogs a long healthy life. Like humans, they are what they eat. More and more companies are starting to answer those demands. They are eliminating artificial ingredients and using natural sources for our pets’ food.

Hungry Bark Dog Food is just one of the several dog food companies offering better-quality kibble than the popular store brands available at your local Walmart. Hungry Bark uses meat as the main ingredient in its food. It is a good quality dog food for pet owners that prefer the convenience and ease of kibble. The ingredients are from trusted sources, and none are from China. The brand offers three grain-free and one grain-inclusive recipes.

The Hungry Bark Dog Food is limited to kibble only. The company does not offer wet food and there are no options for beef, pork, or venison. They do carry a line of add-ins and supplements for pets that may need extra protein or special dietary needs.

The Hungry Bark dog food includes recipes that are grain-free and some controversial ingredients. We always recommend that you discuss any diet change and questionable ingredients with your vet.

    Hungry Bark Dog Food Reviewed

Who Makes Hungry Bark and Where Is It Produced?

Hungry Bark is a dog food company based in Miami, Florida. It offers direct-to-customer service. According to its website, the company’s products are manufactured in the United States, and the ingredients are sourced from the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand.

Other than information assuring customers that the food is made in the U.S. and the sources are not from China, we could not locate information on the specific factories or states where the food is manufactured.

The overall quality of Hungry Bark Dog Food is decent for kibble. The ingredients are vet-approved and cooked slowly to preserve the nutrients.

Which Type of Dog Is Hungry Bark Best Suited For?

Hungry Bark Dog food has been approved by The Association of American Feed Control (AAFCO) for all life stages. The company has options for pet owners who feed their dogs grain-inclusive food and those who prefer a grain-free diet for their pets. There are three options for grain-free and one for grain-inclusive. The company also offers protein add-ins and six supplements for your pups’ special needs.

Which Type of Dog Might Do Better with a Different Brand?

If you have a pup with special needs like food sensitivities or skin allergies, your vet may have suggested a hydrolyzed protein diet. In that case, this may not be an option for your pet.

You can always try Blue Buffalo Natural Veterinary Diet HF Hydrolyzed Dog Food. It is a grain-free diet for dogs with food intolerances. It helps ease digestion and improve your dog’s skin and coat.

Since it is a prescription diet, however, you will need your vet’s approval. Even if the food does not require vet approval, we recommend you discuss any changes in your pet’s diet with your vet.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Pet owners love the convenience of kibble. It helps to make feeding your pet fast and easy. The preservatives provide a longer shelf life, so the food can be bought in bulk, which limits trips to the store. The food contains ingredients that keep costs down and prevent it from going bad.

The process of producing kibble reduces the nutritional value of the ingredients, however.

Hungry Bark wanted to improve the quality of kibble. They developed formulas that included whole meat, plant protein, and vegetables like sweet potatoes, beets, and peas. They added probiotics for digestive health and turmeric and ginger for healthy joints. The food has essential vitamins and minerals for complete and balanced nutrition. Hungry Bark does not add soy, corn, artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors to its food. The recipes are vet-approved and slow-cooked to preserve the nutrients.

The brand offers three grain-free options. They include Superfoods w/Lamb & Turkey, Superfoods w/Salmon, and Superfoods w/ Turkey and Duck. There is only one grain-inclusive recipe, however.

    Grain-Inclusive

The grain-inclusive recipe available from Hungry Bark is Superfoods w/ Chicken, Turkey, and Brown Rice. If you are a pet owner who wants to include grain in your pet’s diet, this recipe includes healthy grains for your dog. The recipe is balanced and nutritious. It includes chicken, turkey, brown rice, and pumpkin. Some ingredients like peas and lentils are controversial, however. We recommend you discuss these ingredients with your veterinarian.

    Grain-Free

The grain-free options from Hungry Bark are Superfoods w/ Lamb and Turkey, Superfoods w/ Turkey and Duck, and Superfoods w/ Salmon. If you have a dog with food sensitivities, you may want to try the Superfoods w/ Salmon before going through the hassle of getting a prescription from your vet. It may also be a more affordable option for those with a tight budget and who cannot afford prescription dog food.

Both the grain-free and grain-inclusive recipes are made with non-GMO fruits and vegetables and antibiotic—and hormone-free meats. The formula contains essential nutrients for a balanced diet and includes probiotics, fatty acids, and superfoods for a healthy immune system.

    Where’s the Beef?

The recipe options are limited to fish and fowl. While dogs may gobble up duck, turkey, and salmon, they also like pork, venison, and beef. The beef protein would need to be added with one of the mix-ins offered by Hungry Bark.

    No Wet Food?

The Hungry Bark dog food brand does not offer wet food. Kibble can pose a problem for pet owners who may have a senior dog or a pet with dental issues. It may be hard for them to chew, and not all dogs will eat kibble softened in water.

Some of the ingredients are questionable. Some studies suggest that peas and lentils may be linked to cardiomyopathy in dogs. We recommend discussing any change in diet and questionable ingredients with your vet. Together, you can make the best decision for your pet.

Hungry Bark is a subscription service that is delivered directly to your home. The food is customized for your dog’s age, breed, and activity level. With the help of nutritionists and veterinarians, Hungry Bark works hard to ensure your pet gets the complete and balanced nutrition it needs. They also offer add-ins for pups that may require a bit more protein in their diet. If your dog has health issues, you can purchase supplements for added nutrients.

For pet owners who prefer to feed their dogs kibble, Hungry Bark is a decent quality food. We think the quality of Hungry Bark is better than some of the store brands out there. The cost is a bit higher too.
