AKC Humane Fund to Provide Support When and Where It’s Needed Most

As more and more people are struggling to make ends meet, a new initiative has been launched to increase access to emergency veterinary care. And with $25,000 in initial donations to three national charities, the AKC Humane Fund assures us that this is just the beginning.

The AKC Humane Fund is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible dog ownership through education, outreach, and strategic grants. Through its programs, the AKC Humane Fund provides critical support to rescue efforts, assists domestic violence shelters to allow pets to remain with their families, and delivers meaningful resources that help strengthen the bond between dogs and the people who love them.

In February, the fund announced an expansion of its mission to provide direct support for low-income pet owners struggling to afford the cost of critical veterinary care, with its first round of donations going to three public charities, Banfield Foundation, BluePearl Cares, and VCA Charities, totalling $25,000. These much-needed funds are aimed at helping expand access to veterinary services for income-qualifying pet owners whose animals are experiencing a life-threatening emergency.

“Access to critical veterinary care can be the difference between a family keeping their beloved pet or facing an impossible decision,” said Brandi Hunter Munden, President and CEO of the AKC Humane Fund. “By expanding our mission to include support for veterinary care, we are responding to a real and growing need among pet owners and reinforcing our commitment to the health of all dogs.”

As the affordability crisis continues, millions of Americans are facing immense financial pressure, with approximately one in three low-income households spending around 95% of their income on basic necessities.1 This leaves precious little when unexpected expenses arise, and that includes the sudden illness or injury of pets. Whilst pet insurance should ideally be considered an essential part of pet care, with the rising cost of living, for many, it has fallen into the category of luxury. This often leaves people facing impossible decisions when it comes to emergency and critical care of their furry family members, at a time when every penny is already accounted for.

Through their new initiative, the AKC Humane Fund aims to help bridge that gap by partnering with trusted veterinary providers and directing resources where they are needed most.

”Increasing access to veterinary care is at the very heart of what we do,” said Kim Van Syoc, Executive Director for Banfield Foundation, BluePearl Cares, and VCA Charities. “Thanks to our incredibly generous donors and partners, including the AKC Humane Fund, we can help even more struggling families receive the support they need when their pet is faced with a life-threatening emergency.”

The AKC Humane Fund has long been recognised for their support of domestic violence shelters, breed rescue, veterinary scholarships, and programs that strengthen the human–canine bond. This new focus aims to build on that legacy by addressing a growing and critical need within the dog-loving community, and as the program continues to grow, they hope to announce further partnerships and funding opportunities.
