We have a few basic requirements for tableware (make that floorware) for our dogs: Food bowls should be easy to clean and nice to look at, and they should stay put during dinnertime (or at least put up a good fight). Here are 10 dishes that man as well as beast can appreciate:
Above: These stainless steel bowls from Doca Pet are heavier than most, making them more likely to stay in place and less likely to become chew toys; $13-$15 at Domestic Beast.
Above: The standard for the English Springer Spaniels in my no-frills childhood home, the Blue Stripe 9-Inch Pet Bowl is $13.99 from Mast General Store.
Above: For the pet on the go, the collapsible Tin Cloth Dog Bowl is made of oil-finished cotton lined with nylon; $38 from Seattle outdoor outfitter Filson.
Above: Newly available from Heath Ceramics, pet bowls in two sizes and colors; $53 for small and $69 for large at Heath’s Sausalito store and coming soon to LA. Call 415-332-3732 x 13 to order, or track down a similar vintage Heath design; Etsy vendor Dipper Vintage is a good source.
Above: Sturdy simplicity—a heavy, chemical-free, dishwasher-safe Stoneware Dog Bowl is $11 for small and $14 for large at Kaufmann Mercantile.
Above: These dishwasher-safe stainless steel bowls slip out of their reclaimed oak base for easy cleaning; the Dog Bowl is $85 at Brook Farm General Store. Because they’re handmade, they’re sometimes on back order; a similar design, the Barn Bowl made from salvaged barn wood, is $98 from Go!PetDesign.
Above: Ore Originals’ Eco-Bamboo Bowl is lightweight, so it may not be the right daily dish for your Rottweiler. But it works for smaller breeds or as a travel bowl—and, yes, it’s made of earth-friendly bamboo; $4-$9 from Domestic Beast.
Above: The return of a 1950s classic made by the revived Bauer Pottery of LA, this Dog Bowl comes in 15 colors and five sizes (plus cat dishes, too), starting at $24.
Above: They may be pricey but these solid pewter bowls will last for countless dog years. Made in Sheffield, England, the Pewter Dog Bowl comes in three sizes starting at £60 from Bone & Rag.
Above: Venerable UK company Mason Cash offers an extensive line of pet bowls in the same biscuit-colored stoneware as their famous mixing bowls. They’re the bowls of choice for my two cats—but that’s for another post. The Cane Dog Bowl is $15.99 for the 6-inch size at Amazon.
