Sniffer Dog Will Help Prevent Spread Of Toads

Bellwood Sheer Folly

I guess the trainers have taught Nifty not to lick the toads. This comes to us from ABC News Online.

I wonder how Dogster Bellwood Sheer Folly, shown here, feels about toads. She doesn’t hunt them as far as I know, but she’s so pretty I just had to use her picture to represent her breed!

Toad-sniffing dog joins border patrol

Australia’s first sniffer dog trained to detect cane toads has been posted to the border between the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

The belgian malinois called ‘Nifty’ will be used to sniff out the pests in vehicles at the border checkpoint at Kununurra, as part of the battle to keep the toads out of WA.

The dog was trained by a Queensland company under a $10,000 Western Australian Government contract.

Jen Francis, of the Department of Conservation and Environment, says Nifty is currently acclimatising to the Kimberley’s warm weather, before starting her duties next week.
