WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Animal Behavior Clinic in Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine needs untrained dogs and dogs with behavior problems for two training classes taking place May 18-19 at the Purdue Armory.

The hands-on classes are part of a continuing education course called DOGS! for veterinarians, veterinary technicians and/or certified dog trainers. The lessons are designed to allow them to practice the training and behavior modification techniques they have learned in class on dogs.

Thirty untrained dogs are needed for the training class from 8:45 a.m. to noon on May 18. The dogs should not have major behavior problems but may have issues such as jumping, pulling on the leash and not coming when called. Owners may stay while the training takes place but are not required to stay.

Thirty dogs also are needed for the behavior problem class from 8:45 a.m. to noon on May 19. Behavior issues that may be considered for this session include anxiety to specific people, objects, animals or sounds; aggression to other dogs or aggression to people; issues with handling or procedures such as touching feet, nail trims, touching ears, etc.; and compulsive disorders such as tail chasing, fly snapping, light chasing, etc. Owners should plan on staying in the facility during this session.

Behavior issues that cannot be considered for the practicum are separation anxiety, global fear (fear of everything) and territorial aggression (aggression only on your property).
