Catahoula Leopard Dogs are loyal and loving, but they need to learn their place in the pack and need a firm handler with experience to establish a hierarchy. They can be territorial and protective of their owners, making them ideal watchdogs and guard dogs.
As far as children, they do well with them if raised with them and do better with older children. They have webbed feet, which allows them to herd and hunt in any terrain where water is present.

Training is essential for these dogs to make them suitable family companions and to prevent the possibility of having to rehome the dog. They require high-quality dog food appropriate for their age and adequate daily exercise of at least 1 to 2 hours.
