Are Cane Corsos Banned Anywhere in the US? Facts & FAQ

Share

Cane Corso

Cane Corsos, an Italian breed with impressive size and loyalty, have grown in popularity in recent years. However, you may be concerned about breed-specific legislation that could impact their ability to own a Cane Corso. In the United States, there are no federal laws banning Cane Corsos, but some cities and states have breed-specific legislation in place. These regulations can vary widely, so it’s essential to know your local laws.

To assist you, we’re shedding light on the states that have breed-specific legislation regarding these massive dogs.

Understanding Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL)

Breed-specific legislation (BSL) is a set of laws that target specific breeds of dogs, typically those perceived to be more dangerous or aggressive than others. These laws can range from restrictions on ownership to outright bans. Some common breeds targeted by BSL include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and sometimes Cane Corsos.

While no states have a statewide ban on Cane Corsos, some cities and counties have enacted ordinances prohibiting or regulating their ownership. These states are as follows:

  • Kansas
  • Arkansas
  • Idaho
  • Colorado
  • Nebraska
  • South Dakota
  • Washington
  • Oregon

If you live in one of these states, it’s essential to check local ordinances and restrictions on Cane Corso ownership.

Why Are Cane Corsos Subject to BSL?

Cane Corsos are large muscular dogs initially bred for hunting and guarding. Due to their size and strength, they can be seen as intimidating, and when not properly trained or socialized, they may exhibit aggressive behavior.

Unfortunately, these traits have led to negative public perception, with some people believing Cane Corsos are inherently dangerous. It is important to note that, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there is no evidence that breed-specific legislation is effective in reducing dog bite incidents.

Instead, the AVMA advocates for comprehensive, community-based dog bite prevention programs focusing on responsible dog ownership and education.

Tips for Responsible Cane Corso Ownership

You want to know you’re providing your Cane Corso with the best care possible, and that starts with understanding responsible ownership.

Research & Select a Reputable Breeder

When looking to add a Cane Corso to your family, it’s essential to choose a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health and temperament of their dogs. Reputable breeders will screen for common health issues in the breed and provide a supportive environment for the puppies during their early development.

Socialization & Training

Proper socialization and training are crucial for all dogs, especially large breeds like Cane Corsos. Begin socializing your Cane Corso puppy early, exposing them to various environments, people, and animals.

Enroll in a puppy socialization class and continue with obedience training to help your dog become a well-mannered companion.

Regular Exercise & Mental Stimulation

Cane Corsos are an active breed and require regular exercise to maintain their health and prevent boredom. Provide daily walks, playtime, and opportunities for mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys or training exercises.

Proper Nutrition

Feeding your Cane Corso a high-quality, age-appropriate diet is essential for maintaining their overall health. Consult your veterinarian to determine the best diet for your dog’s needs.

Regular Vet Checkups

Schedule regular veterinary checkups for your Cane Corso to monitor their health and address any potential issues early on. Keep your dog up-to-date on vaccinations and preventative care, such as flea and tick control and heartworm prevention.

Conclusion – Be a Responsible Owner & Advocate for Your Breed

As a Cane Corso owner, it is crucial to be a responsible advocate for your dog and the breed as a whole. Ensure your dog is always under your control, whether on a walk or in the park, to reduce any negative public perception and minimize risks.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure your Cane Corso is a happy and healthy part of your family for years to come.

    1. Hello Leanne,

thank you for your question. We wouldn't say that Cane Corsi are absolutely inappropriate for elderly person, however there are surely breeds that are more suitable. The Cane Corso is an intelligent breed, but that doesn’t necessarily make them the easiest dog to train. They need a firm, consistent owner. Without clear boundaries and solid training, Cane Corsi will assert themselves, set their own rules, and try to take the leadership position. While they’re reliably loyal, protective, and emotionally sensitive to their family, positive engagement and leadership are vital for their development. A Cane Corso makes an ongoing effort to stay well-behaved. They thrive when they have jobs and enrichment to avoid becoming bored, uncompliant, and potentially destructive. Socialization is crucial from a young age since they are naturally aloof with strangers.

So you can own a Cane Corso, but you must be able to provide them with regular training and strong leadership. We suggest you to go through this article to pick the perfect breed for your situation:
