Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier Review - featured image

Our Final Verdict

We give Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

Quality: 5/5

Durability: 5/5

Features: 5/5

Ease of Use: 4.9/5

Aesthetic: 5/5

Airline Compliance: 5/5

My job turned me into a jet-setter, traveling all over the country at least twice a month. My dog Lorelei has become quite acclimated to being my little adventure buddy, as I don’t fly or drive anywhere without her. But if you travel as often as I do, you know that dealing with luggage is a significant inconvenience no matter how hard you try, or how many years of experience you have in a nomadic lifestyle. Add a pet into that equation, and you’re definitely going to pull your hair out at least once.

This is why finding the right travel carrier is vital – if you’re lugging around a bulky or inconvenient bag with your most precious cargo inside, the stress becomes astronomical. A lot of bags mean well, but I feel like they either haven’t been designed by someone who a) has a pet or b) needs to travel with one. This is where the many clever features of Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier struck my fancy. This feels like a bag created by someone who understands what you need on the road! I was eager to see just how well these features performed on my adventures.

Our Experience

Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier Review - dog in the carrier

Right off the bat I can tell you that this carrier has been used extensively, as I had a trip to Colorado right after getting the Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier in the mail. Before I even get into my experience, I want to express how incredibly thrilled I am with this bag – the features made flying so much easier (and less stressful) than any carrier I had used before.

All of my carriers had originally come from Petco and were not collapsible. Color me surprised when this expandable carrier arrived at my doorstep fully folded with a dust bag! The carrier folds down quite flat and small, bedding included, which makes storage very easy. To build the bag back up, you just pull the center frame up and zip it into shape.

Upon giving the carrier its shape, I could immediately feel how high-quality the construction is. The materials feel good in my hands and I kept discovering new features as I played with the bag. Even something as simple as the shoulder pad on the strap was well designed. My dog is 10 lbs, which isn’t particularly heavy by most dog owner standards, but definitely wears on your shoulder when carried for long periods of time. The shoulder strap is so well designed that the discomfort was well alleviated.

Putting the carrier on the ground, my dog Lorelei climbed in without prompting or hesitation! My dog does fancy crates, kennels, and bags – but this was the first time that she had jumped in so fast. The faux fleece bedding gave her a cozy spot to rest, and she curled right up in comfort.

As I mentioned before, we had a flight to Denver to catch. On our travel day, it was so easy to get this carrier from the car, to the terminal, through security, and onto the plane. I flew Southwest Airlines, which requires you to check in with an agent who weighs the bag, checks your pet, and gives you a luggage tag for in-cabin travel. This is the most stressful part of the experience, as they can deny your pet boarding for a number of reasons. As I am typing this from Colorado, I can attest that this bag fits all of the airline’s requirements in size, weight, and pet comfort. The bag breezed through TSA security with ease as well.

While waiting at the gate, I used the expandable side to give Lorelei some more room to sprawl out. She loved it, and we got many compliments from strangers walking past. They were very enthused about the expandable side and how comfortable my dog was, as well as the aesthetic of the bag. I fly a lot, and this is the first time that a passerby actually stopped to talk about how nice the carrier looks.

Another big stressor is making sure the bag fits comfortably under the seat in front once inside the plane. Passing the size inspection at check-in doesn’t necessarily mean your bag will be comfortable. On Southwest, it is an open seating policy, and I tend to opt for the middle seat because it actually has more room underneath than the window and the aisle – and as a rule, carriers do not fit in the aisle seat on most planes because there is an extra notch there. A kind gentleman invited Lorelei and I into the middle seat on the second row (we lucked out!), and the carrier fit underneath with ease. I didn’t even have to squish the top of it (which is why soft-sided carriers are recommended over the hard ones, you may need to squish a bit), it slid right in! The carrier even left room for my feet, which my previous one did not. Lorelei slept the entire 2.5-hour flight.

Once we arrived, we grabbed a taxi to the hotel. Taxis can also deny you a ride if you have a dog, but the beauty of this bag is that it looks like a luggage duffel when all of the window shades are down (and you have a dog that doesn’t bark, like mine). I feel the leather handles and seams, along with the nice color, contribute to not looking like a “pet bag”. My driver had no idea I had a dog with me for the whole hour-long journey.

Once in the hotel room, the carrier doubled as my dog’s kennel. I expanded the side so she had plenty of room. She slept in there comfortably at night, and I could zip her up without worry if I had to run down to the lobby to grab a plate of the complimentary breakfast or snag something from the shop. While at my work, the carrier continued to act as a kennel and Lorelei didn’t mind one bit.

I see many, many years of adventures with this Gold Series bag, and wish I had it sooner.

Key Features

Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier Review - bag strapped in car

Specially Designed for Travel

To me, it feels like Mr. Peanut’s thought of everything. I never had a carrier so set up for travel like this one. The travel-specific features of the Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier include:

  • Airline-compliant size and meeting FAA regulations
  • Weighing only 3.4 lbs without your pet to not add more weight
  • Luggage strap to attach to your suitcase
  • Car seat belt strap to make vehicle transport easy
  • Leash tether for harnesses inside the carrier
  • Auto self-locking zippers all around
  • Padded shoulder on the strap to make carrying for long hours less painful
  • Name tag holder on the main strap
  • Feet on the bottom of the bag
  • Completely leak-proof
  • Plenty of ventilation for your dog or cat
  • Able to load pet from the top of the carrier or either side
  • Zippered mesh pocket on the side for treats, supplies, or paperwork

Many Windows With Expandable Side

I counted a total of 5 windows, all made of mesh with rollaway covers so you can customize where your dog’s windows are (or open them all for a nice breeze)! The windows being available on all sides (and on the top) is very convenient, I can have my dog enjoy a nice view on one side and block her view from distractions on the other side.

The expandable side, of course, is a top-selling feature of the Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier – increasing the size of the carrier so your pup can sprawl out!

Bedding Included

Unlike other travel carriers, the Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier comes with bedding for both the direct inside of the carrier and the expandable section.

The faux fleece padding with composite base insert goes into the primary compartment (and is easily removable). The bottom is velcro to keep it in place, and this padding can be unzipped and thrown in the washing machine.

The faux fleece padding for the expandable section is zipped into the wall side, so when you expand, you just zip it down to line that section.

Easy To Keep Clean

Actual pet owners clearly thought out the design of this carrier, because the entire bag is simple to clean. For starters, the lining inside of the Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier is fully waterproof and leak-proof, making it easy to wipe up accidents. The outside of the carrier can be wiped down with water and soap in full, as the material is not bothered by moisture whatsoever. The faux fleece padding can be machine washed as well.

Packaged With Other Travel Necessities

Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier comes bundled with a free set of 4 premium gel pee pads and a collapsible water bowl! Both of these are must-haves for travel, whether you travel by air or by vehicle. Take it from someone who commutes with their dog a lot!

Is Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier a Good Value?

As someone who has used (and owns) quite a few travel carriers, I cannot begin to express my enthusiasm for just how worth every penny this particular carrier is. Although this bag appears similar to other types of expandable carriers, there are notable differences that make it top-notch against the rest (as detailed in the Key Features section).

Priced at $109, the cost is actually quite a bit less than the “airline approved” carriers I frequently see at shops like Petco and Petsmart, and most definitely less than having to buy one at the airport itself! For a product that will last you trip after trip, it is well worth the cost.

How We Tested

The most straightforward test is to put the carrier on the ground and see if my dog gets inside of her own free will – much to my amusement, she hopped right in there the second I opened the door! I have always found this to be an excellent sign, as my dog can be rather picky.

I proceeded to put all of the features themselves to good use, such as the expandable side, luggage slip, window folds, and more. The carrier traveled in the car, on a flight, in a hotel room, at an outdoor park, and so much more. Cleaning was a breeze as I could easily wipe it down with a moist rag.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How Do I Make Sure My Pet Fits?

To make sure your pet is compatible, you’ll need to measure their height, width, and length when they are lying down. Pets at 16” in length when down are the best fit because this bag is sized at 18″ exterior length, exterior width at 10.5”, and exterior height at 11” (and the inside dimensions are slightly smaller). This bag is best for pets who don’t weigh any more than 15 lbs.

I Need To Return My Carrier: What Is the Policy?

All unused and undamaged products are welcome to be returned at any time (alongside all their accessories). That being said, all return label fees are charged at cost, but Mr. Peanut’s does offer the unique opportunity to do a no-fee re-purchase if size or styling was an issue. With this, the return label cost is waived. Shipping fees are not refundable, however.

Mr. Peanut’s urges used products to be donated to local animal shelters and rescues, as the company cannot accept them.

How Do I Train My Dog To Be Comfortable Inside the Carrier?

For dogs that don’t fancy carriers as much as mine does, you can certainly train them to be comfortable. The most important thing is to acclimate them to the bag, and show them that this is a safe and positive space:

  1. Introduce the carrier in your pet’s most comfortable place, such as in the living room at home. Place treats or toys inside to encourage them to check the carrier out.
  2. Offer food near or inside the carrier, building a positive association. Reward every time they go inside of their own free will!
  3. Start practicing closing the carrier door while still offering treats and positive reinforcement. Gradually increase the time the dog is inside with the door zipped shut.
  4. Practice short trips so your pup gets used to the motion and travel aspect of the carrier.
  5. Remember that consistency and patience are the key to success! Continue offering positive reinforcement.

Cats are a bit more fickle, but my experience has shown that they do enjoy carriers as a safe space once they are used to them. For cats…

  1. Leave the carrier out and open, and let your cat explore it.
  2. Make the carrier warm and inviting by offering blankets with your scent, toys, and for food-motivated cats, throw treats in there.
  3. Feed your cat inside the carrier to build a positive association.
  4. Practice short sessions with the carrier zipped shut and being carried around.
  5. If your cat still shows signs of discomfort but a trip is rapidly approaching, consider using veterinary-approved calming aids!

Conclusion

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to use another carrier again, and this is coming from someone who has seven of them – I may need to figure out what to do with the other 6! It is so clear that Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable Pet Carrier was designed by someone who has had to travel frequently with their pet, which already makes it superior in my eyes.

With my dog loving getting into the carrier even when we are stationary at home, she certainly gave her seal of approval – and that’s the most important one!
