Yes, Michael Vick Owns a Dog

After his Twitter kerfuffle last week, Vick owns up to owning a "pet," but we're pretty sure it's a dog.

A few days ago we wrote about Michael Vick’s dumb Twitter experience, in which he posted a picture that contained a box of Milk Bone dog biscuits, and later he deleted the photo in favor of the same image without the dog biscuits.

Speculation ran rampant that Vick now owns a dog and was desperately trying to cover it up.

It turns out he was. Vick now owns a dog, and he was desperately trying to cover it up.

Or, rather, he owns a “pet.” In a statement released by his publicist concerning the dog, Vick did not use the word “dog.” He used the word “pet.” Twice. We don’t know whether it’s a dog (but it almost certainly is) and we don’t know whether it’s a Pit Bull (let’s hope not). Here’s the full statement, via Philly.com:

I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.

Vick has said in the past, controversially, that he wanted a dog — pet — for his kids, because it was their “dream,” and to take that away from them was “selfish on my behalf.”

If you’re looking for a silver lining on this, there it is. We hope his kids will care for the dog and love the dog — all the things you’re supposed to do to a dog instead of killing it, which was Vick’s previous approach — and perhaps teach Vick to do the same.
