How Much Does a Labrador Retriever Cost?

Some supplementary questions should include:
  • Are you registered with (your local ANKC body)?
  • Are you a member of any breed clubs or associations?
  • Have the parents and puppies been given a vet’s bill of clear health?
  • How do you ensure the puppies are properly socialized?
  • Do you have any conditions of sale? (e.g. de-sexing, health guarantee, rehoming policy)
  • How do you ensure your puppies go to good homes?
  • Can you offer ongoing support after I take my puppy home?

A reputable breeder should be able to answer all of these questions confidently and enthusiastically.

The 3 Things to Know Before Buying a Labrador Retriever

1. They eat everything and anything.

Labradors are notorious for being gluttonous. This won’t stop at simply their dinner (and the cat’s dinner!), but they will try to eat everything they possibly can. You will need to Labrador proof your home, so they do not ingest anything that they shouldn’t. It also means that managing their weight can be a challenge.

2. They love to swim.

Labs love the water, so be aware that they will be instantly drawn to a swim when they see a pond. This behavior is natural and should be fostered, but avoid bodies of water on your walks if you want them to stay dry!

3. They are vulnerable as they develop.

Labradors are prone to a range of joint, muscle, and skeletal issues. It is essential to not overexercise them when they are still growing (until the age of 18 months) as this can increase the risk of such issues in the future.

Conclusion

It’s hard to go wrong with purchasing a Labrador, but there are things you need to consider when picking a breeder. Consider whether you can visit the puppies, and the information the breeder supplies you, and talk to past customers of the breeders for assurance.

All that is left to say now is congratulations on your decision to bring a Labrador into your family! You are assured years of love and loyalty from your new companion.
