Read on to find ten of the most adorable dog sweater ideas to keep your pup warm this winter.
The 10 DIY Dog Sweaters
1. Simple Upcycled Sewed Sweater by You Make It Simple
Materials: | Old sweater, pins, fleece (optional) |
Tools: | Sewing machine, serger, scissors |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
You don’t need to buy expensive materials to make your dog a cozy sweater this winter. Instead, raid your closet for an old sweater that’s collecting dust and get to work on this upcycled sweater. You do need to have some experience with a sewing machine, and if you also have access to a serger, that’s even better. You Make It Simple provides a full video tutorial for this project as well as a link to a downloadable pattern available on Etsy.
2. No Sew 5-Minute Sweater by The Cotton Floozy
Materials: | Oversized old sweater |
Tools: | Scissors |
Difficulty level: | Beginner |
This no-sew five-minute sweater tutorial from The Cotton Floozy is a super quick and easy way to make your pup a cozy and warm sweater from materials you already have in your home. All you need to do is make a few cuts in the shirt, measure your dog with what’s left of the sweater to ensure you get it the right length, make another cut or two, and that’s it! This project will have raw edges, and if that bothers you, you can easily stitch the hem to make the finished product a bit more polished.
3. Cozy Fleece Dog Coat by Compulsive Craftiness
Materials: | Fleece, Velcro, thread, tape |
Tools: | Sewing machine |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
Thank goodness for the Wayback Machine for saving this cozy fleece dog coat tutorial from the now-defunct Compulsive Craftiness website. While this DIY is technically more of a coat and less of a sweater, we still wanted to include it in our list. The best part is if you are pretty handy with a sewing machine, you can whip up this coat in as little as 15 minutes. You will need to download the free pattern, which, thankfully, is still available thanks to the Wayback Machine. Once you have that in hand, all you will need to do is cut, tape, and trace the template onto your fleece, make a few easy passes with your sewing machine, and your sweater is complete!
4. Granny Square Sweater by Firefly Fiber Arts
Materials: | 50–500 yards of DK weight yarn, tapestry needle |
Tools: | H/8 hook |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
How adorable is this granny square dog sweater? Though I’ve personally never held a crochet hook in my life, I really like this tutorial because it’s so customizable. The granny square pattern is a classic that’ll never go out of style, and you can make one for your pup for every season. The orange, yellow, and white sweater in the tutorial is very “candy corn” for Halloween, but you can easily make a red, green, and white version for Christmas. Or how about a pastel-colored one for your chilly spring morning walks?
5. Upcycled Sweater with Cuffs by Resweater
Materials: | Sweater, old shirt cuffs, thread |
Tools: | Scissors, sewing machine |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
This upcycled sweater with cuffs tutorial from Resweater is a quick-to-put-together project you can do in less than an hour. You do need to have some experience with a sewing machine to pull it off that quickly, however. First, find an old sweater you no longer have use for. Decide if you want your pup’s sweater to have different colored cuffs. If so, you’ll need to cut the cuffs from a different sweater. Though the website doesn’t provide a downloadable template, they do provide an image that shows what your template will need to look like. Your sizing may differ depending on your pup’s size.
6. Fur Baby Coat by Sew Can She
Materials: | Batting or scrap fabric, plaid flannel, cotton or polyester batting, lining fabric, wide bias binding, Velcro, thread, safety pin |
Tools: | Sewing machine, scissors |
Difficulty level: | Advanced |
While this dog coat project by Sew Can She isn’t technically a sweater, it’s still an awesome tutorial to try if your dog is prone to chills during the cooler months of the year. The creator’s YouTube page has a helpful video tutorial for drafting the pattern to make this advanced project a smidge easier. While this DIY is definitely more difficult than others on our list, it’s a great activity to try if you want to challenge your skills.
7. Crochet Dog Sweater by Make & Do Crew
Materials: | Yarn, thread, tapestry needle, safety pins, wooden buttons (optional) |
Tools: | Size K crochet hook |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
This adorable crocheted sweater tutorial is a great project if you’re looking to practice your crocheting skills. I do recommend having some level of experience with crocheting before tackling this DIY, but once you’re familiar with the basic stitches, you should be ready to give this a go. The creator provides two options for fastening the sweater, either with a basic seam or with a button closure. You can choose what works best for your dog’s comfort and your skill level.
8. Crocheted Bumble Bee Sweater by Crochet Guru
Materials: | Yarn, yarn needle |
Tools: | Size 1/9 crochet hook (5.5mm) |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
This adorable crocheted bumble bee sweater project is a must for all the girl pups looking to stay warm this year. The sweater has a cute ruffled edge that makes it almost dress-like, but if you love the bumble bee look and have a boy dog, you can crochet a straight row instead of ruffles to make it more “masculine.” This pattern is simple to crochet if you have some experience, but make sure you measure your pup’s forechest, chest, and neck to ensure it fits them properly.
9. Knitted Jumper for Small Dogs by Knit with Alice
Materials: | Chunky yarn, circular needle, tapestry needle |
Tools: | 6mm or 7mm crochet hook, stitch markers |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
If you’re more comfortable with knitting than sewing or crocheting, this knitted jumper tutorial should be right up your alley. This sweet jumper project is ideal for small-breed dogs, but you can work up or down if your pup is smaller or bigger. The creator also has a downright adorable Christmas version of this jumper. We highly recommend you check it out if you want a holiday-themed sweater for your pup. You have to purchase the PDF pattern, but it’s only a few dollars and totally worth it for the more intricate style of the design.
10. Cable Knit Sweater by Yarnspirations
Materials: | Yarn, yarn needle |
Tools: | Knitting needles, stitch holder, stitch markers |
Difficulty level: | Intermediate |
Is there any sweater design quite as classic as the cable knit? This free sweater tutorial evokes this quintessential design that’ll keep Fido warm and cozy all winter long. The pattern is available in five sizes, so you can find the perfect fit for your pet’s size. We highly recommend you have some level of familiarity with knitting before tackling this intermediate project.
Final Thoughts
Dog sweaters are a must during autumn and winter in some areas of the world. If your pup is prone to chills or just enjoys spending time outside during the cooler months, a sweater is an absolute necessity. The ten projects above are a great place to start if you’re crafty and don’t have the budget to spend on expensive “designer” sweaters from the pet store. Happy crafting!
