A Jack Russell terrier who got a little too enthusiastic while in pursuit of a rodent ended up stuck in a pile of rocks and boulders at a beach for more than 24 hours in La Jolla, Calif. It took lifeguards, firefighters, a veterinarian, and a bomb squad to finally extricate the 7-year-old Fuji.

“It’s tough. It’s hard to watch,” Fuji’s owner, Ruth Guymer, told KGTV during rescue efforts. “I mean, it’s hard to think about her being there for that long, cold and stuck and hungry and thirsty.” She was relieved when a vet tranquilized the poor stuck pooch.

Rescuers tried to use vegetable oil to wiggle Fuji out, but to no avail. Several hours later, a bomb squad arrived and used a fiber optic camera to get a better view of Fuji’s predicament. With some pushing in the proper direction, she loosened up. At 9 p.m. PST yesterday, a vet pulled Fuji out and gave her to a very grateful Guymer. At press time, Fuji was at an emergency veterinary hospital. But the looks of this video (it won’t embed properly, or I would share it here), she should be OK. At least I hope so. I’ll keep you posted if I learn anything.

Jack Russells have a reputation for getting into interesting situations. This was a doozy. Are there any Jack Russell friends out there with tales of the wee terriers getting into pickles?
