Holley the collie is dog of the year
A COURAGEOUS collie who was tied up at the side of a road and left to die has overcome adversity to be crowned the region’s RSPCA dog of the year.
Pregnant Holley was found tethered to a stake on a roundabout on the A11 when she was nine months old.
Muzzled, and with a rope through her mouth, she was covered in bruises where she had been kicked and punched.
When Holley was first rehomed from the Dogs Trust by loving new owner Graham Misson, she was timid and frightened of everybody and everything.
Due to the damage to her mouth caused by the rope, her food still has to be minced as her palette is so soft she cannot eat properly.
But today (Tuesday, 31 October), with a great deal of patience and kindness from her new owner, Holley has overcome her many fears and anxieties.
She has even become a registered PAT (Pets As Therapy) dog, which means she regularly goes to people in hospital, hospices and residential homes.
Now the five year-old, from Northfield Avenue, Cambridge, has beaten off stiff competition to become the eastern region’s Dog of the Year finalist.
Delighted owner Graham said: “It came as such a shock. Holley always wins the heart of everyone she meets but I never expected her to win such a prestigious title.
“She’s such a star, extremely courageous and the best dog I could ever wish for. I would love her to win the overall competition and just hope she gets lots of votes!”
