Maxine Clark, chief executive of Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc., is perched on a bright red chair, at a bright blue conference table in a bright yellow meeting room, rushing to finish an interview before her next appointment arrives.

Bringing Dogs To Work Makes Employees Happier

Suddenly there’s a loud shuffling sound outside the door, an announcement of sorts that the guests have arrived. No, the news doesn’t come from a secretary, but from a big lumbering dog.

“Milford, Milford, come here buddy,” says Clark to the 98-pound St. Bernard mix. “Where are you going? He’s going to the meeting. He says he’s late.”

Milford, who belongs to another company executive, is one of about 10 dogs that come to work with their owners at Build-A-Bear’s headquarters in an Overland industrial park and is part of Clark’s efforts to make employees happier and more creative.
