I LOVE UMSTEAD!!!

OMD, Umstead is one of my favorite places in the world!! We always go to the Highway 70/Glenwood side of things. There are trails of varying lengths, but none are too difficult. There's a lake AND a fun creek to get your paws wet in! Doggies are supposed to be leashed at all times, but be aware that many don't follow this rule (so be on the lookout for unleashed dogs). Definitely bring poop bags and water along. NC state park rules say you have to pick up poop if it's on a trail or in another public area; if you poop off the trail, you technically are allowed to leave it (or push it off the trail) -- but Mom usually picks up my poop anyway. The 70 side of the park also has a campground - I can't wait till spring so we can go camping!!

Fun!

We love hiking at Umstead State Park. There are two entrances--one off of US 70 and the other at the junction of Harrison Ave. and I-40. We've only been on the Harrison side of things, but there is enough there to keep us really busy! Our favorite is the Company Mill Trail, which is a 5-mile loop that crosses over the bridle path, so if we seem tired we can turn it into a shorter jaunt. Umstead is gorgeous all year round--we especially love going in the autumn. Be sure to pack poop bags and water, and be warned that while there are trash cans if your dogs are like mine, they'll poop as far away from the recepticles as possible :), forcing you to lug a bag of smelliness for much longer than you'd like. The terrain varies--some trails (like company mill) have some challenging spots and probably aren't the best for beginning hikers, and some (like the bridle path) are flat and easy to navigate. There is definitely something here for everyone, and maps are posted at all the trail junctions and heads. My two have the best time sniffing and hiking, and are always exhausted when we get home. We'd recommend this as a place for everyone to experience!
